African Integration

8 July 2023. It is a tradition of the African Union (AU) to celebrate African Integration during July of
every year. The premier event for showcasing the successes achieved so far on the integration journey is the Boma of Africa, which this year was hosted in hybrid format and streamed from the Headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC)  in partnership with AfroChampions.

The festival convened Africa’s decision makers across politics, business, technology and the technocracy.

The emphasis of Boma 2023 was the signing of the 4D Pact (pact.4DCorridor.org) by leading Pan-African institutions.

The 4D Pact is a commitment to work together to promote and resource large-scale platforms and accelerators of the innovations at public and private sector level urgently needed to transform Africa according to Agenda 2063: the Africa we want.
"The 4D Initiative, bolstered by the Trillion Dollar Fund announced in 2020, will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and propelling scientists, startups, and innovators to new heights. By channeling investments into sectors such as biotech, gene editing, genomics, and artificial intelligence, the initiative aims to have a game-changing impact on health, trade, local manufacturing, and job creation. The goal is to shape a greener continent and create climate-smart jobs through an innovation-driven marketplace."
A host of African leaders shared their support and commitment to the 4D Pact.

The opening session featured prominent speakers, including
  • H.E. Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union,
  • H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana and the African Union Champion on Financial Institutions,

  • H.E. Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission
  • H.E. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.

A diverse range of speakers, including

  • Tidjane Thiam, AU Special Envoy & Executive Chair of Freedom Acquisition Corporation
  • Mr. Adefunke Adeyemi, Secretary General of AFCAC,

"The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is an ecosystem of researchers, scientists, technologists, and we will be actively involved in a 4d bio innovator and accelerator throughout our academic platform"
"ARISE is a key programme of collaboration between EU and AU. The ARISE initiative is implemented by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and promotes research in different fields of scientific endeavour taking into account EU-AU joint priorities such as public health and green transition."

The ANH Academy Week is a series of annual events that bring together the community of researchers, practitioners and policymakers working at the intersection of agriculture, food systems, nutrition and health. The objective of the ANH Academy Week is to foster knowledge exchange, innovation and learning around interdisciplinary ANH research.

The ANH Academy Week consists of two interlinked components:

  • Research Conference - an abstract-driven symposium featuring oral presentations, poster sessions and keynote speeches, as well as plenary round tables, side events and working group discussions.
The ANH Academy builds on the successful legacy of five agri-health research conferences organised by the London Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH), as well as events and activities coordinated under the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH), led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

How agrifood stakeholders can support European farmers in the regenerative transition

29 June 2023. Europe’s agriculture industry, and the farmers at its heart, are under pressure. The challenges faced by farmers are numerous. From the stresses of climate change, rising energy and input prices, as well as the costs associated with the regenerative transition, to the ever-decreasing number of young farmers entering an industry already stretched for both brains and brawn over the coming decades.

In the first of Bayer Crop Science’s ‘Focus on Farmers’ webinar series, farmers discussed the key barriers to sustainable farming. The panel of experts responded with a discussion on how supply chain actors can collaborate to scale solutions to these challenges and support farmers in a just transition to regenerative agriculture.
  • The barriers to implementation of sustainable practices, and how value chain actors can support farmers to overcome them.
  • How business can help farmers build profitable and resilient livelihoods through regenerative farming.
  • The role of agrifood stakeholders, especially retailers and food brands, in increasing awareness and facilitating farmer uptake of regenerative practices.
The panel:
  • Jens Hartmann, head of EMEA Region, Bayer Crop Science
  • Natalie Smith, head of agriculture, Tesco
  • Bram Van Hecke, farmer and president, Groene Kring
  • Marie Ellul, well-being & sustainability senior manager, Mondelēz International
  • Rob Shepherd, managing partner/chair, Allenford Farms/Environmental Farmers Group
  • The webinar was moderated by Toby Webb, founder, Innovation Forum.
