Global Pastoralist Gathering

9-15 December 2013. Nairobi, Kenya. IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, through its Global Drylands Programme and the World Initiative for Sustainable Pastoralism (WISP), and in partnership with the World Alliance of Mobile Indigenous Peoples (WAMIP), organized a gathering of pastoralist leaders in Emasho Camp Lodge, Kiserian, Kajiado County

The Kiserian Gathering was funded by IUCN, UNEP, IFAD, FAO, the International Planning Committee on Food Sovereignty, the Civil Society Mechanism for the Committee on World Food Security and AU-IBAR. It provided a forum for developing a strong and coordinated position on the role of pastoralism in the Green Economy and how this will contribute to the achievement of global food security, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The gathering outputs will feed directly into high level meetings in 2014 and into the development of the Sustainable Development Goals, scheduled for 2015.

The Kiserian Gathering brought together over 100 pastoralist delegates from 50 countries across the globe including pastoralist community leaders, elected representatives, government dignitaries, and civil society organizations. The Gathering also provided an opportunity for dialogue for members and prospective members of the World Alliance of Mobile Indigenous Peoples.
