Food Tank panel discussion on “One Health” for World Food Safety Day

7 June 2021Food Tank panel discussion on “One Health” for World Food Safety Day
The food advocacy organization Food Tank hosted a panel discussion on World Food Safety Day to discuss "One Health: Food Safety for All". The panel included key international experts from FAO and the WHO, as well as from academia and the public sector.
  • Food Tank’s Danielle Nierenberg
  • Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, WHO,
  • Tom Heilandt, Secretary of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission,
  • Makaiko Khonje from the MwAPATA Institute in Lilongwe, Malawi,
  • Professor Alan Reilly, who worked at the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)
  • Dr Carla L. Schwan, from the Food Safety and Defense Lab, Kansas State University.
Discussion will focus on the One Health approach to food safety, which recognizes the connection between the health of people, animals, plants, and the environment. Animal and plant health are critical to the capacity of agriculture to produce enough food to feed the world. Keeping animals healthy also minimizes the risk of zoonotic pathogens (disease-causing organisms that can be transmitted between animals and humans), antimicrobial resistant organisms and more.

This event was made available as part of WHO’s Health Talks, which form part of the Food Systems Summit Dialogues, which are taking place in the run-up to September’s Food Systems Summit.
