Innovations through Start-ups’ (SAIS) Investment Readiness Program seeks to
scale digital innovations developed by African start-ups that enable their

start-ups will receive virtual coaching and training sessions, in-person
workshops, and access to service providers. This opportunity is aimed at
start-ups (for-profit businesses) registered in Africa with scalable digital
solutions with a clear positive impact on income in the agricultural and/or
food sector. Applications have to be received online by 31 August 2021.

ERC Advanced Grants support ambitious
research projects with up to € 2,5 million for the duration of 5 years. Up to
an additional €1 million can be requested in exceptional cases to cover (a)
eligible “start-up†costs, (b) the purchase of major equipment, (c) access
to large facilities, and/or (d) other major experimental and field work costs.
The call is open to researchers of any nationality who intend to conduct their
research activity in any EU member state. The applicant must be an established
research leader with a recognized track record of research achievements. The

The Future Agro Challenge (FAC) is a global
competition for food and agribusiness startups. Ideas and ventures will be
selected to compete for the title of “Agripreneur of the Year.†The
challenge is open to ideas in many areas such as agroforestry, sustainability,
agriculture tourism, and others. Selected agripreneurs will gain access to
mentors, investors, potential clients, and new market opportunities at the FAC
Global Championships, an event at the Global Agripreneurs Summit. The

TRACE and Alfred Friendly provide
fellowships to strengthen investigative journalism (including reporting on
environmental crimes, climate change and others). The program provides training
seminars at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia (USA). The fellowship
covers all costs of program-related international and domestic travel, health
insurance and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses.
Candidates must be between 25-35 years old and have at least three years of
experience as a journalist at a print, online or broadcast media outlet. The
fellowship is open to early-career journalists from developing countries.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation annually
funds graduate and doctoral students across all subjects and nationalities for
university studies in Germany. Preference is for applicants working in the
subject areas of the Foundation such as climate and energy, resource
governance, and ecology and green development (among others). The special focus
regions for international students are Central and Eastern Europe; EU
neighborhood countries and the CIS; the Middle East and North Africa;
transition and newly industrialized countries; and conflict regions worldwide.
Applicants should be capable in the German language. The deadline for
international applications (i.e., from outside Germany) is 01 March and 01
September of each year.

The Atlantic Project Awards honor projects
that showcase success stories and best practices for a more sustainable
Atlantic ocean and Atlantic coastal communities. Projects may focus on blue
economy, ocean literacy, marine renewable energy, ocean health and resilient
coasts, as well as international Atlantic Ocean cooperation. Eligibility
extends to professionals, entrepreneurs, organizations, research institutions,
maritime clusters, associations and NGOs. Note that the Awards only showcase
funded projects (in progress or completed). Project ideas are not eligible. The
winner will be invited to the 7th Atlantic Stakeholder Conference (Ireland,

The Business Partnership Facility (BPF)
awards subsidies to support and develop private sector involvement in
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing countries. Projects
submitted under this call must contribute to achieving at least one clearly
identified SDG. The BPF provides non-refundable grants between €50 thousand
and €200 thousand that represent a maximum 50% of the total investment.
Eligible countries include several from Asia, Latin America, the Middle East
and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa (full list of eligible countries is
provided in the call). Partnerships must comprise actors from the private
sector, civil society, academia and/or the public sector, with at least one
organization from the for-profit private sector. The application deadline is 07

Global
Agriculture and Food Security Program

The Global Agriculture and Food Security
Program (GAFSP) announces a call for proposals for programs and projects that
strengthen agriculture and lessen food insecurity in low-income countries. This
funding will support medium- to long-term COVID-19 response efforts for a more
sustainable, inclusive, and resilient recovery of agriculture and food systems
in a changing climate. GAFSP intends to fund 5-8 proposals for a total of at
least US$125 million. Applications (English and French) are invited from
governments in the 56 member countries of the International Development
Association in East Asia and the Pacific; South Asia; Eastern and Central
Europe; the Middle East; Africa; and Latin America. The closing date for
applications is 08 September 2021.

Feed the Minds supports projects which
empower people in least developed, low income and lower to middle income
countries through the Education for Change program. Projects are implemented by
local non-governmental organizations or community-based organizations working
to support marginalized communities. Specific projects include vocational
training, agriculture, on-farm and off farm income generating activities.
Medium projects with budgets between £25 thousand and £150 thousand will be
supported. Applications should be submitted before 10 September 2021.

Development (USAID) seeks concept papers from qualified entities to implement
the Scaling Sustainability and Resilience of Community Conservancies and
Coastal Ecosystems of Kenya program. The goal of this activity is to improve
the resilience of vulnerable populations and environments by increasing the
capability of local communities to mitigate against recurrent environmental,
economic, socio and political risks. USAID intends to provide US$9.8 million to
prevent the loss of biodiversity, up to US$2.5 million for Water Supply,
Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and US$2 million for Feed the Future activities.

European Commission seeks to improve the
governance of water for agricultural, drinking and pastoral use in Madagascar.
The priorities of this call for proposals are drinking water supply, pastoral
hydraulic works, as well as water, hygiene and sanitation. The overall
indicative amount made available is €1,3 million. Eligibility extends to
non-profit organizations established in a Member State of the European Union or

The Great Thinkers International Fellowship
Program seeks young enthusiastic people with ideas and passion to push humanity
forward by working on the UN SDGs. The program is open to all kinds of

entrepreneurs. During the fellowship, fellows will be engaged in producing

from qualified entities to implement the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for
Soybean Value Chain Research program. The purpose of the Soybean Innovation Lab
is to develop evidence-based technologies and practices across the soy market
systems in Africa. USAID intends to provide $10 million in total USAID core
funding over a five year period. Eligibility extends to institutions of higher

The University of Essex invites applications
from African students who self fund their postgraduate studies. The university
offers a scholarship of £4 thousand to African students that will be paid as a
discount on the tuition fee. Available courses include biological sciences,
marine biology, and biochemistry, among many others. Applicants that meet all
the eligibility criteria and firmly accept the offer of their place by 18
September 2021 will automatically be awarded this scholarship (please read the
instructions carefully).

Department of Biotechnology offers a fellowship program for scholars from
developing countries to pursue research towards a PhD in biotechnology. The
TWAS-DBT postgraduate fellowships are tenable at key biotechnology research

older than age 35. DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover living costs,

The United Nations – Nippon Foundation
Fellowship provides government officials and other mid-level professionals from
developing states with advanced training on ocean affairs and the law of the
sea. The 9-month fellowship program is composed of two consecutive phases which
provide fellows with advanced and customized research and training
opportunities. Fellows will receive a stipend each month during their fellowship.
The stipend is intended to cover the cost of lodging, boarding and other
essentials such as local transport. In addition to the stipend, fellows will be
provided with a book allowance of US$100 per month. Candidates must be between
the ages of 25 and 40. The call for applications is open until 24 September

The Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence
(EiR) scheme aims to increase the knowledge and awareness in UK universities of
cutting edge industrial science, research and innovation. The scheme provides

The value of the scheme is up to a maximum of £20 thousand. The scheme is open

Vital Voices offers GROW Fellowships to

BBSRC seeks collaborative research projects
involving collaborative research with at least one company and one academic
partner. Case Studies from the LINKS scheme include the themes of agriculture,

seeks new products, services, and best practices that can help farmers,

The Women for Africa Foundation has
launched the 7th Edition of its "Science by Women" program. The
program aims to promote African women’s leadership in scientific research and
technology transfer, and to foster the capacity of the research centers in
their home countries. Thematic areas include agriculture and food security;
water; energy and climate change; and several others. Each Spanish Centers of
Excellence will host one senior woman researcher for a six-month fellowship.
Eligibility to apply extends to women who are nationals of any African country,
and who have a PhD, with at least three years of postdoctoral experience. The

visits of internationally renowned scientists to research institutions located

Microsoft seeks proposals from around the
world that focus on the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to
better monitor and manage Earth’s natural systems for a more sustainable
future. Funding supports the creation and deployment of open source trained models
and algorithms in the focus core areas of climate change, biodiversity,
agriculture, and water. The grant provides software developers with Azure
compute credits worth up to US$15 thousand. Submissions are accepted on a
rolling basis. The two remaining revision deadlines for project submission in
2021 are 05 July and 04 October 2021.

Acumen and IKEA invite applications for a Social
Entrepreneurship accelerator program designed to support social entrepreneurs
to develop a scalable business model. The 19-week program aims to strengthen
the capacity of social enterprises in East Africa. Social enterprises
(non-profit or for-profit) based in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia or Rwanda are
invited to apply. Participants will have the opportunity to compete for US$25
thousand in seed funding. The program runs from 08 June to 08 October 2021.

The Halcyon Incubator program equips
early-stage social entrepreneurs from all around the world with support to
transform their ideas into scalable and sustainable ventures. Ventures may be
for-profit, hybrid, or undecided, as long as the core mission is to create

agriculture, sustainable energy, or sustainable development.) Ventures structured
as ‘non-profit’ will only be considered if they have a product or service
they are selling. Partnerships (ventures co-founded and led by two individuals)

venture for food and living expenses during the residency phase, mentorship,

Exchange Program. The program supports agricultural research and research

Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in
Higher Education

scholarships to mid-career professionals from selected developing countries for
short courses (duration 2 weeks to 12 months) and master's programs (duration

supports the Ibrahim Leadership Fellowship position in the African Development

Ibrahim Fellow includes energy (“lighting up and powering Africaâ€);

provides financial and technical instruments to support projects proposed by
enterprises, cooperatives and institutions. Funding is targeted mainly to

crops, timber, bamboo and rattan, minerals, and others). Projects need to focus

Center for Social Entrepreneurship

The Miller Center seeks applications for an
online accelerator program focused on social enterprises that support women’s
economic empowerment. The program does not provide financial assistance but
offers mentorship and capacity building. It is designed for established social
entrepreneurs that directly serve people living in poverty. Non-profit,

The United Nations – Nippon Foundation
Fellowship provides government officials and other mid-level professionals from
developing states with advanced training on ocean affairs and the law of the
sea. The 9-month fellowship program is composed of two consecutive phases which
provide fellows with advanced and customized research and training
opportunities. Fellows will receive a stipend each month during their
fellowship. The stipend is intended to cover the cost of lodging, boarding and
other essentials such as local transport. In addition to the stipend, fellows
will be provided with a book allowance of US$100 per month. Candidates must be
between the ages of 25 and 40. The call for applications is open until 24

The Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence
(EiR) scheme aims to increase the knowledge and awareness in UK universities of
cutting edge industrial science, research and innovation. The scheme provides
industrial scientists and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to spend one day a
week at a university developing their project. The EiR awards are for one year.
The value of the scheme is up to a maximum of £20 thousand. The scheme is open
to applicants of any nationality, who are eligible to work in the UK.

Amphibian Ark offers a wide variety of
conservation grants for amphibian research and conservation. Start-up grants
are one-time grants of US$5 thousand to help newly-launched projects get
started at the very beginning. Start-up grant extensions of US$3 thousand
provide continued support for AArk seed or start-up grant projects. Workshop
grants of up to US$750 are available to attend conservation-related workshops.
Mentorship grants of up to US$1500 are available to organizations which have
previously received an AArk seed or start-up grant. Emergency grants offer
limited funding to past recipients of AArk grants for emergency situations such
as emergency rescue of wild populations facing imminent threat of extinction.
Projects should work with species in their range countries, involve
range-country biologists, conform to biosecurity standards, and observe other
guidelines explained on the website. Applicants are required to submit a brief
Project Outline, prior to submitting a full application. The project outline

Program supports female STEM2D leaders (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math,

The Darwin Initiative funds capacity
building, training, research, and education in support of the major conventions
on biodiversity -- focusing on the developing world. The program invites

Postdoctoral Fellowship supports postdoctoral researchers at the Museum of

experience in taxonomy and/or systematics is required. The fellow receives a

The Women for Africa Foundation has
launched the 7th Edition of its "Science by Women" program. The
program aims to promote African women’s leadership in scientific research and
technology transfer, and to foster the capacity of the research centers in

Excellence will host one senior woman researcher for a six-month fellowship.

The Woodrow Wilson Center offers a 9-month residential
fellowship to scholars, practitioners, journalists and public intellectuals.
Fellows conduct research in their areas of interest, while interacting with

world that focus on the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to
better monitor and manage Earth’s natural systems for a more sustainable
future. Funding supports the creation and deployment of open source trained

agriculture, and water. The grant provides software developers with Azure
compute credits worth up to US$15 thousand. Submissions are accepted on a

Conservation Leadership Program

makes grants to advance the leadership capacity of early-career
conservationists in the developing world. Grants combine research with
conservation. CLP provides support to small teams of at least three
individuals. Future Conservationist Awards are up to US$15 thousand. Follow-Up
Awards and Leadership Awards are up to US$25 thousand and US$50 thousand,

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

The Georg Forster Research Award supports
the work of accomplished researchers who are expected to continue to develop

developing countries. Nominees must be nationals of a developing or transition
country, excluding the People's Republic of China and India. The award amount

research project of their own choosing in Germany in close collaboration with a
specialist colleague. To support the collaboration, the Foundation may grant

biological sciences, and geo-sciences. The fellowship is for three months and

bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund

worldwide. The Fund uses the IUCN Red List as the primary guide to the

iF International Forum Design GmbH

The iF Social Impact Prize aims to publish
and support design projects that contribute to solving urgent challenges and
help to improve living conditions in the developing world. Solutions should
already be established and help to solve well known issues in any category of
the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The best projects will share a cash prize
of €50 thousand in total. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations, companies

international business program for schools run by the educational charity Teach
A Man To Fish. It guides and supports teachers and students to plan and set up
real, sustainable school businesses and generate real profits to help support

Prizes are between US$250 and US$5 thousand, including in-kind donations like

Foundation (EREF) offers research grants on the management of solid wastes.
Topics include waste minimization; recycling; waste conversion to energy,

apply. Previously awarded grants have ranged from US$15 thousand to over US$500

The Turtle Conservation Fund (TCF) makes
grants to organizations and individuals worldwide for conservation and research
of endangered and critically endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles. TCF

The Waterloo Foundation manages an
Environment Fund that supports projects to manage and conserve tropical
rainforests. Applications are invited from UK charities in partnerships with

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The DAAD offers scholarships to qualified
individuals from eligible developing countries for post-graduate studies at
German universities in development-related subjects. The program (EPOS) is open
to individuals who completed their previous academic degrees no longer than six
years previously; who have at least two years of professional experience; and
who are nationals of countries receiving official development assistance (DAC
list of the OECD). The available courses range across water resources;
renewable energy; land management and tenure; agricultural sciences; forest
sciences; ecology; nature conservation; environmental governance; and many
others. Most scholarship deadlines for the 2022-2023 intake fall between August
2021 through December 2021, varying by courses (check carefully).

The Jana Robeyst Trust Fund provides
financial resources to small non-profit organizations and individuals to carry
out conservation research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Priority will be given to
projects related to the conservation of forest elephants. Applicants can be

access journals, invites nominations for the Remote Sensing 2022 Young Investigator
Award. The winner will receive CHF2000. This prize will be given to one young

funds graduate and doctoral students across all subjects and nationalities for
university studies in Germany. Preference is for applicants working in the

and €200 thousand that represent a maximum 50% of the total investment.

The Business Partnership Facility (BPF)
awards subsidies to support and develop private sector involvement in
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing countries. Projects
submitted under this call must contribute to achieving at least one clearly
identified SDG. The BPF provides non-refundable grants between €50 thousand
and €200 thousand that represent a maximum 50% of the total investment.

The Incubation Program supports entrepreneurs seeking to solve some of the

Participating entrepreneurs receive 3 to 4 months of professional advice and
mentorship. Applications can be submitted on a rolling basis year-round.

two-week academic summer programs for high school students from all around the
world. The program offers four interdisciplinary sessions on campus at Yale

Future†supports women in developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD and

for PhD courses and a maximum of US$40 thousand for post-doc research programs.

Advancement of University Women (AAAUW) provides support for women pursuing
full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the USA who are not U.S. citizens

Globe Award for Sustainability

The Energy Globe Award recognizes outstanding
projects worldwide that conserve and protect natural resources, and that employ
renewable energy. Energy Globe seeks innovative projects and smart technologies
in six categories: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Youth, and a new special category
Sustainable Start-Up. The international winners in each of five categories
receive €2000 in prize money. Applicants can be individuals as well as
organizations (i.e., private companies and corporations, development NGOs,
community associations, government agencies, universities, and others) that
contribute to climate change and other environmental issues. The deadline for

iF International Forum Design GmbH

The iF Social Impact Prize aims to publish
and support design projects that contribute to solving urgent challenges and
help to improve living conditions in the developing world. Solutions should
already be established and help to solve well known issues in any category of
the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The best projects will share a cash prize
of €50 thousand in total. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations,
companies and foundations (student concepts will not be accepted). There is no
deadline, projects can be submitted on a continuous basis. The winners will be
decided twice per year, after 27 May and 18 November 2021.

The School Enterprise Challenge is an
international business program for schools run by the educational charity Teach
A Man To Fish. It guides and supports teachers and students to plan and set up
real, sustainable school businesses and generate real profits to help support
their school or a social cause of their choice. Thematic areas include
agriculture, drinking water and sanitation, and the environment, among others.
Prizes are between US$250 and US$5 thousand, including in-kind donations like
laptops and cameras. Please note that only pre-primary schools, primary
schools, secondary schools and technical/vocational colleges are eligible
(universities are not eligible to apply). The deadlines for project submission
are 21 May, 21 August, and 21 November 2021.

The Beit Trust supports projects for
health, education, welfare, and environment in Malawi and Zambia (Note: Due to

and irrigation water. Grants do not normally exceed £50 thousand. Applications

development. RSA makes travel grants of up to £500 to its members to present

Foundation (EREF) offers research grants on the management of solid wastes.
Topics include waste minimization; recycling; waste conversion to energy,

landfills. There are no geographical restrictions on institutions that can
apply. Previously awarded grants have ranged from US$15 thousand to over US$500
thousand (with an average grant amount of US$160 thousand). The deadlines for

Nations Women's Guild Vienna

The United Nations Women's Guild annually
makes grants to registered charities in support of projects in education and
health that benefit disadvantaged children around the world. Past projects
include many focusing on clean drinking water in communities and schools. The
maximum grant is €10 thousand. Applications are accepted in Arabic, Chinese,
English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. The application deadline is 01

Right Sharing of World Resources

Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) makes
seed grants to support income-generating projects led by women. RSWR's current
priorities are grassroots organizations selected states and districts of India;
Quaker groups in Kenya and Sierra Leone. Projects include many in the
production and sale of fruits and vegetables; meat and milk; grain crops; fish;
fuelwood; and other enterprises associated with small-scale agriculture and
rural livelihoods. Grants are usually up to a maximum US$5,500 per year (but
many are considerably smaller), for a maximum of five years. The next
application deadline is 30 December 2021. (However, RSWR recommends earlier
submissions of at least a month prior to the deadline to allow time for
revisions.)
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The DAAD offers scholarships to qualified
individuals from eligible developing countries for post-graduate studies at
German universities in development-related subjects. The program (EPOS) is open
to individuals who completed their previous academic degrees no longer than six
years previously; who have at least two years of professional experience; and
who are nationals of countries receiving official development assistance (DAC
list of the OECD). The available courses range across water resources;
renewable energy; land management and tenure; agricultural sciences; forest
sciences; ecology; nature conservation; environmental governance; and many
others. Most scholarship deadlines for the 2022-2023 intake fall between August
2021 through December 2021, varying by courses (check carefully).

access journals, invites nominations for the Remote Sensing 2022 Young
Investigator Award. The winner will receive CHF2000. This prize will be given

makes research grants and scholarships to students worldwide (but mainly South
African citizens) to pursue studies in all areas of Science, Engineering,
Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities. The allocation of funds is
demand-driven. There is no maximum or minimum proposal request. The NRF makes
one call for proposals starting in February of each year. Please note that
institutions set their own much earlier internal closing dates for
applications, therefore, applicants must check the deadlines of each individual
program very carefully. The call closes 31 December 2021.
