05/09 Celebrating 25 years of beans for impact and nutrition in Africa

Beans are a staple food and source of livelihood in Africa. Recognizing this, PABRA members comprising the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, NARS, and value chain actors aim to improve bean production and consumption. This innovative partnership brings together over 934 partners generating and deploying bean-related knowledge and technologies across 31 countries.

This side event celebrated 25 years of PABRA, highlighting approaches and solutions that have improved livelihoods and food security across sub-Saharan Africa. For instance, more than 37 million farmers (58.1% women) have accessed improved varieties resulting in a yield increase of about 36% in their farms. This has translated into business opportunities for over 277 SMEs commercializing bean-based products and providing markets to more than four million farmers. Gathering voices from across the bean food chain, this event explored how to build on PABRA’s success to double production and consumption of beans across the continent. The event hoped to inspire bold action for beans over the next five years and beyond that will contribute to the building of resilient food systems.
  1. Session 1. PABRA’s transformation journey,
  2. Session 2. PABRA’s impacts from research to investments platform,

05/09  IFAD: Food system transformation: How to end hunger sustainably and nutritiously

By IFAD and co-hosted by: Shamba Centre

AFDB kicked off its AGRF 2022 activities by co-organizing a pre-forum side event focused on the African Emergency Food Production Facility. The Bank's $1.5 billion Facility is an unprecedented, comprehensive initiative to support smallholder farmers filling a food shortfall of at least 30 million metric tons of food - especially wheat, maize, and soybeans imported from Russia and Ukraine.

Bank Vice President for Agriculture, Human and Social Development, Dr. Beth Dunford, delivered opening remarks at the side event, speaking to how the new Facility will provide 20 million African smallholder farmers with certified seeds, increased access to agricultural fertilizers, as well as help create an enabling environment for investment in building Africa’s food systems. The Bank has earmarked $100,000 to support this year’s annual AGRF.
