Ghent University grants PhD scholarships to promising students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University in Belgium. Coastal Resilience Story Grants

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) offers reporting grants to journalists worldwide to support the production of in-depth stories that will call attention to coastal resiliency and solutions for coastal issues. EJN welcomes any story ideas that will explore coastal resilience issues, including ecosystem rehabilitation, livelihood and food security, shelter and infrastructure, land use and development. EJN expects to award grants of approximately US$1,200 each. The application deadline is 06 February 2023.

Echoing Green helps emerging social entrepreneurs around the world with grants of seed capital and technical assistance to support their start-up organizations. Seed funding of up to US$80 thousand over 18 months is offered to for-profit organizations in the form of recoverable grants. Past fellowships include examples in renewable energy, waste management, smallholder farming, climate change, and other societal challenges in developing countries. The next application period is 24 January through 07 February 2023.

Research Collaboration 2023

Within the framework of Danish development cooperation, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls for research proposals between Denmark and researchers in partner countries. In 2023, the following countries are eligible for research applications: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Palestine, Somalia (incl. Somaliland), Tanzania, and Uganda. Eligible research themes include energy transitions; water resource management; food and agriculture. The expected duration of research projects is up to 5 years within a maximum grant of DKK 10 million for each project. Only universities or research-based institutions registered in Denmark and with a capacity to (co-)supervise Ph.D. students are eligible to submit an application. The application deadline (Phase 1) is 08 February 2023.

Marie Curie COFUND Program

The Marie Sklowdowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) support research training and career development. The MSCA COFUND scheme aims at stimulating regional, national or international programs to foster excellence in researchers’ training, mobility, and career development. Each proposal under the COFUND scheme shall have a sole participant that will be responsible for matching funds to execute the proposal. Participants submit multi-annual proposals for new or existing doctoral programs or fellowship programs that may be run at regional, national, or international level. Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa 2023

The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support the advancement of social science faculty in Sub-Saharan Africa toward completion of doctoral degrees in topics of peace, security, and development. Past topics have included some related to climate change and land issues. The postdoctoral writing fellowship supports up to six months of completing an article or book manuscript through a stipend of up to US$3,000. Applicants must be citizens of and reside in a Sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. The application deadline is 10 February 2023.

Seeding Labs welcomes applications to participate in Instrumental Access. The program makes high-quality laboratory equipment and supplies more affordable to university departments in low- and middle-income countries. Seeding Labs receives donated equipment from a variety of sources, including research institutions and manufacturers. Applicants submit online requests for items included in the Seeding Labs equipment inventory. Items are mainly for biology and chemistry. The average value of the items included in a shipment, based on the secondary (used) market, is generally in the range of US$100 thousand. The recipient organizations are charged a fee (based on their country's income level) for program administration, equipment warehousing, equipment packing, and ocean freight. The deadline for submissions is 11 February 2023.

Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships for Early-Career Researchers

The European Commission, through the Euraxess initiative, offers the Zukunftskolleg Konnect Fellowships to support early-career researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America. ZUKOnnect aims to extend research networks and environments through on-campus research stays at thirteen departments of the University of Konstanz. Subject areas include ecology, limnology, ecotoxicology, botany, amongst many others. The fellowship offers a stipend of €1,200/month for doctoral students and €2,000/month for postdoctoral researchers, as well as travel expenses and access to resources and events. Energy Globe Award for Sustainability

The Energy Globe Award recognizes outstanding projects worldwide that conserve and protect natural resources, and that employ renewable energy. Energy Globe seeks innovative projects and smart technologies in five categories: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Youth. The international winners in each of five categories receive €2000 in prize money. Applicants can be individuals as well as organizations (i.e., private companies and corporations, development NGOs, community associations, government agencies, universities, and others) that contribute to climate change and other environmental issues. The Endangered Landscapes Programme (ELP) invites expressions of interest from organizations and partnerships for the Landscape Restoration Grant. The program supports landscapes and seascapes restoration in areas that are ecologically degraded, fragmented, disconnected, missing key species and vulnerable to climate change. The maximum grant amount projects can apply for is €100 thousand. The program welcomes applications for smaller amounts. Each team must identify a Lead Partner who will take responsibility for the project. Lead partners must be not-for-profit organizations. The United Nations World Wildlife Day organizes a youth art contest along the theme of “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”. Organizers seek art that highlights people making a difference for wildlife.
