Short Course on Science and Diplomacy

Deadline: 05 March 2023

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) seek candidates for the third AAAS-TWAS course on science and diplomacy. The 5-day course is for young scientists whose work has brought them into the international policy-making arena; policymakers interested in science-based themes that might influence their work; administrators of research institutions; and research funders focused on building international networks. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are due by 05 March 2023.


Postdoctoral Fellowships for Early-Career Researchers

Deadline: 06 March 2023

In partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), TWAS invites early-career researchers from 21 Least Developed Member Countries to apply to the IsDB-TWAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The fellowship will support research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, providing recipients with high-level training in areas relevant to sustainability science. The program will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation and food. The deadline for receiving applications is 06 March 2023.


Student Design Award

Deadline: 08 March 2023

The iF Student Design Award recognizes students and their future-oriented concepts that aim to solve a global development challenge. The best concepts earn a share of €50 thousand. All winners will be honored with a two-day event in Istanbul. Students and recent graduates of all design-related courses and programs are welcome to register their concepts. The registration deadline for participation is 08 March 2023.

 

Boosting Food Production in Rwanda

Deadline: 10 March 2023

The European Commission (EC) aims to promote sustainable food production of socially and environmentally inclusive agriculture value chains targeting local markets in Rwanda. Applicants may request up to €700 thousand in project funding. Eligibility extends to non-profit organizations established in the European Union or Rwanda. The deadline for submission of concept notes is 10 March 2023.


World Habitat Awards

Deadline: 14 March 2023

The World Habitat Awards (WHA) demonstrate solutions to current housing issues faced by countries worldwide. The WHA takes a broad perspective to include energy, waste management, water conservation, resilience to natural disasters, and other environmental aspects in its definition of habitat. Two winners will each receive £10 thousand. The deadline for applications (English, French, Spanish) is 14 March 2023.


Women's Land and Resource Rights

Deadline: 15 March 2023

Mama Cash makes grants in support of grassroots women’s rights groups that focus on environmental justice, for example, groups that address the exclusion of indigenous women from decision-making over their land and groups that fight for their right to water, food, and a clean, safe, and healthy environment. Grants can be used for advocacy, capacity building, public education, or forming alliances across movements. The average grant size is between €20-30 thousand per year. Letters of Interest (LOIs) can be submitted between 15 February and 15 March 2023.


Networking Civil Societies

Deadline: 15 March 2023

The Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa) promotes tandem cooperations between civil society organizations from Germany and partner countries (listed in the announcement). CCP Synergy is aimed at employees from two organizations who are planning a joint initiative. The purpose of such a collaboration could be, for example, the planning and implementation of joint events, fact-finding missions, research or artistic undertaking in the fields of sustainable development or climate justice. CCP Synergy supports both cooperating organizations with a total of €4,500. The call for applications is open until 15 March 2023.


Grants for Grassroots Conservation 2023

Deadline: 15 March 2023

The New England Biolabs Foundation makes grants to grassroots and charitable organizations to support conservation of biological diversity; ecosystem services; community food security; and marine environment. The geographical scope focuses on regions (specified on the website) in Central America; South America, and West Africa. The maximum grant size is US$10 thousand. Most grants are US$3 thousand to US$8 thousand. The deadline for submission of LOIs is 15 March 2023.


Technology Entrepreneurship Program for Girls

Deadline: 22 March 2023

Technovation invites teams of girls from all over the world to learn and apply the skills needed to solve real-world problems through technology. Girls work with women mentors, find a problem in their community and develop a mobile app to launch a startup. Categories may include environment, poverty, health, and others. Eligibility extends to teams of up to 5 girls (aged 8-18 years). Registration deadline is 22 March 2023.


One Young World Scholarship

Deadline: 22 March 2023

The Audi Environmental Foundation supports research into new technologies and scientific methods that protect the natural necessities of life for humans, animals, and plants. Audi Environmental Foundation offers scholarships to 15 inspiring young leaders to attend the 2023 One Young World Summit (Belfast, UK). This scholarship is intended for young leaders driving change and tackling the climate crisis through innovative new technologies. Nationals between the ages of 18-30 from all countries will be eligible to apply. The application deadline is 22 March 2023.


Prize for Innovation in Global Security 2023

Deadline: 27 March 2023

The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) offers a prize to recognize groundbreaking concepts by any individual, group of individuals, or organization, that offer exceptional potential in addressing peace and security challenges. All disciplines and fields are relevant (including climate change and environmental security). The prize is a fully funded 2-month incubation program within the GCSP’s Creative Spark in Geneva (worth CHF 15 thousand). The deadline for applications is 27 March 2023.


Professional Short Courses with Scholarships 2023

The Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation invites participants to apply for new short-term courses in 2023. Wageningen University & Research offers a wide range of online courses to support professionals. Courses have different deadlines and locations. Thematic areas include Climate Change, Water Management, Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, and many others. Most courses are open to professionals of government departments, NGOs and civil society organizations, businesses, development agencies, universities and colleges for higher education, and individual consultants. Courses are eligible for scholarships through the Orange Knowledge Program. The deadline to apply for courses is 30 March 2023.


Research Grants 2023

The Arturo Falaschi Fellowships Program offers long and short-term fellowships to assist in the training of scientists from ICGEB's member states, including many developing countries. The fellowships are for research at collaborating universities in the UK, Italy, India, and South Africa. For short-term PhD fellowships, the application deadline is 31 March and 30 September 2023. For doctoral fellowships, the application deadline is 31 March 2023. For post-doctoral fellowships, the deadlines are 31 March and 30 September 2023.


Scholarships for International Students 2023

Xiamen University (XMU) in coastal Southeast China supports several doctoral, masters, and undergraduate programs in English. Subject areas at XMU include marine affairs, environmental sciences and ecology, life sciences, and many others. The university's scholarship programs include several for international students. The application deadline is 31 March 2023.


Research to Action Grants

Deadline: 31 March, 30 June ,31 October and 31 December 2023

ETH for Development (ETH4D) supports ETH bachelor students, master students, doctoral candidates, post-docs and senior scientists to develop prototypes. The grant sum is up to CHF 5 thousand. Preference is given to activities in lower-middle-income countries with direct involvement of collaborating institutions or agencies from said countries. There are four application deadlines per year: 31 March, 30 June, 31 October and 31 December.


Land Accelerator Africa

Deadline: 31 March 2023

The Land Accelerator is a training and mentorship program targeted specifically toward businesses that restore degraded forests, farmland, and pasture. The Land Accelerator Africa provides entrepreneurs across Africa with mentorship and networking opportunities, technical training, and workshops, as well as potential investors. Participants have the chance to receive an innovation grant of US$5,000. Companies who restore land and have at least one prototype been preferred. The application cycle is open through 31 March 2023.


Self-Help Program

Deadline: 31 March 2023

The special self-help program of the U.S. Embassy to Lesotho supports small, sustainable community-based initiatives that have an immediate and strong impact on the local community. The Embassy expects to support different types of projects: from development projects such as agricultural cooperatives to women’s empowerment and the environment. Grants typically range from US$3 thousand to US$10 thousand per project. All applicants must include a significant community contribution. The Embassy welcomes applications from Lesotho-based nonprofit organizations, community-based organizations, and citizens. The closing date for applications is 31 March 2023.


Future Africa Challenge

The Future Africa Challenge is a competition to explore the creative potentials of young Africans in Africa and the diaspora. The Challenge seeks projects or solutions of young innovators within 7 categories: Education, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Humanitarian, Agriculture, Advocacy and Movie. Applicants must be between the ages of 15-25 years. The winners of each category receive a cash grant of US$10 thousand. The application deadline is 31 March 2023.

Research Competition 2023

Each year, the Belgian Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences sponsors a competition to stimulate high-quality research regarding problems inherent in the developing world. The questions for 2023 request a study on the impact of climate changes and/or anthropogenic activities on ecosystem services and a study that would link biodiversity changes to the worldwide food supply and health evolution of populations in the South. Each award-winning work is granted a prize of €2,500. The application deadline is 01 March 2023.

 

 

Online Certificate Program: Tropical Forest Landscapes

Deadline: 01 March 2023

The course “Tropical Forest Landscapes: Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use” is an online certificate program for environmental professionals from around the world. The online program includes four thematic eight-week courses, a yearlong capstone project course and an optional field course in Latin America or Asia. The course covers themes in tropical forest landscape conservation and restoration, climate change mitigation, and food security. Partial scholarships are available on a competitive basis. Scholarship awards cover between 25-75% of the tuition fee. The application deadline is 01 March 2023.


Community Grants 2023

NextWorldNow (NWN) is committed to working with community leaders who are solving difficult social problems. This includes social problems related to water, sanitation, deforestation, smallholder productivity, and food security -- among other subject areas. Grants are up to US$10 thousand. To apply, community organizations submit a short "Notification of Interest" to register their intent to submit a formal grant application. NWN will screen the initial requests and forward a full application form to selected community organizations. The deadline to submit a Notification of Interest is 01 March 2023.


Global Impact Challenge

Deadline: 01 March 2023

The Nudge Global Impact Challenge is an online personal development program for young professionals that focuses on leadership, sustainability and impact. Participants learn from leading companies (profit and non-profit), social enterprises, governmental and non-governmental organizations through individualized coaching sessions and learning modules. The Nudge academy provides 30 scholarships to successful applicants which frees them of paying the participation fee (€5.990) for the program. The program concludes with a two-day ‘Grand Finale‘ closing event (June 2023) in the Netherlands (this event is not covered by the scholarship). The program is open to young professionals (23-33 years) from all around the world. The deadline is 01 March 2023.

 

Research in Latin America

Deadline: 01 March 2023

The American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) offers the Latin American Student Field Research award for field projects by Latin American graduate students. Each of five grant recipients receives US$1,500. The ASM also offers the Oliver P. Pearson Award to young professional mammalogists of any nationality who hold academic or curatorial positions in Latin America. The Pearson research grant is US$5,000 plus a travel grant of US$2,000 to attend the ASM annual meeting following the award. The application deadline for both types of awards is 01 March 2023.


Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 14 (Life below Water)

The Young One World Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 14 seeks solutions that could protect and/or restore existing ocean based resources. The challenge welcomes solutions from entrepreneurs with for-profit enterprises. The winner will receive a US$50 thousand project startup grant and 12-months of mentorship from Credit Suisse. The application deadline is 01 March 2023..


Global Solvers Accelerator

Deadline: 01 March 2023

The Global Solvers Accelerator is an eight-month project-based collaborative learning workshop furthering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Up to 20 participants will be invited to attend the fully sponsored week-long in-person retreat in Germany (July 2023). Eligibility extends to young community development practitioners aged between 20 – 35 years from all around the world. Applicants must have an existing social impact project. The program offers financial aid for deserving participants. Applications close on 01 March 2023.


Innovation Impact Grant Programme

Deadline: 01 March 2023

Expo Live supports novel solutions that address pressing environmental and climate challenges. The program offers up to US$50 thousand in funding to support the growth of social enterprises, startups and grassroots projects from around the world that offer creative solutions to pressing challenges. The Grant Program is open to social entrepreneurs, SMEs, non-profit organizations, and government entities. Interested applicants should submit a pre-proposal by 01 March 2023.


Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships

Deadline: 02 March 2023

The Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development and are aimed at students from low- and middle-income countries who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. Awards are tenable for a 12-month period of study at any approved UK university or higher education institution for a specific program of research. All applications must be submitted by 02 March 2023.

 

Preserving African Wildlife Species

Deadline: 07 March 2023

The Kevin Richardson Foundation funds the work of organizations who preserve African wildlife species, protect wildlife habitats, and reduce conflict between humans and wild animals. A wide variety of proposals will be considered, including academic research and rescue and rehabilitation projects. The Foundation awards up to US$ 25 thousand to successful applicants. Projects based in southern Africa are favored, however all projects based in Africa will be considered. Applicants must be a registered non-profit organization or trust. The application deadline is 07 March 2023.


Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program

Deadline: 10 March 2023

The Mongabay Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program supports up to 12 fellows per year. Fellows will gain experience working with a range of editors at international news outlets, develop their environmental reporting skills, and create a portfolio of original publications to help them advance their careers in journalism. Each fellow will receive US$500 a month for the duration of the six-month fellowship (US$3,000 in total). The fellowship is open to anyone from a low- to upper-middle income tropical country. The application window for the second cohort will run from 01 January 2023 through 10 March 2023.


Grants for Ecologists in Africa 2023

The British Ecological Society (BES) makes grants for ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. Applicants must be scientists and citizens of a country in Africa or its associated islands; have at least an MSc or equivalent degree; be working for a university or research institution in Africa that provides basic research facilities; and carry out the research in a country in Africa or its associated islands. The maximum value of a grant is £8 thousand for research. An additional sum up to £2 thousand may be requested to fund travel to help grantees develop connections with other ecologists outside their usual peer groups. The application deadline is 15 March 2023.


Training & Travel Grants

The British Ecological Society (BES) makes grants to PhD students and postgraduate research assistants to meet the costs of specialist field training courses and to network and publicize their research at workshops and conferences. Applicants must be members of BES. However, there are no restrictions on nationality or residence of applicants. Grants of up to £1 thousand are available. The application deadline is 15 March 2023. Please be aware that Training and Travel Grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis.


Grants for Research and Conservation of Wild Cats 2023

Deadline: 15 March 2023

Panthera makes grants for research and conservation of the world's populations of wild cats. The Kaplan Graduate Awards Program (up to US$15 thousand) supports conservation efforts of young biology graduate students working on all wild felids in situ, with a particular focus on threatened species. The Sabin Snow Leopard Grants Program supports in situ conservation efforts on the snow leopard in Asia. The Small Cat Action Fund (up to US$15 thousand) supports in situ conservation and research on many of the world's 31 small cat species. The Winston Cobb Memorial Fellowship is made to an exceptional early-career conservationist to undertake a field-based internship for training and experience on a wild cat conservation project selected by Panthera. Letters of Interest for all programs must be submitted by 15 March 2023.


Award for Biosphere Reserve Management

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sponsors the Michel Batisse Award for outstanding achievements in biosphere reserve management. The award is US$12 thousand and international travel and allowances in Paris to present the winning case study to the MAB-ICC session. The deadline for applications (English, French) is 15 March 2023.


International Climate Initiative Small Grants

Deadline: 15 March 2023

Germany's International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects on climate change mitigation and adaptation, and biodiversity projects that have climate relevance. The focus of the IKI Small Grants scheme is to provide support to the implementation of projects addressing the global loss of biodiversity in connection with climate change. IKI Small Grants selects project proposals and provides funding between €60 thousand and €200 thousand. Not-for-profit organizations and for-profit non-government organizations, if they pursue strictly non-profit objectives, are eligible to apply. The deadline for applications is 15 March 2023.

The British Ecological Society (BES) makes Research Grants in support of scientific ecological research where there are limited alternative sources of funding. Small projects can be awarded up to £5 thousand, and early-career ecologists can apply for funding up to £20 thousand. Applicants must be members of BES. However, there are no restrictions on nationality or residence of applicants, or where they carry out their research. The application deadline is 15 March 2023.


Outreach Grants 2023

The British Ecological Society (BES) makes Outreach Grants of up to £2 thousand to encourage the promotion of ecological science to a wide audience. Proposals must be aimed at a non-academic audience. Awards are open to individuals and organizations to organize ecological public engagement events, including BES members, researchers, schools, museums, libraries and community groups. Additionally, BES offers up to £1 thousand to members who want to undertake public engagement activities within the UK. The application deadline is 15 March 2023.

COAL Prize 2023

The COAL Prize 2023 invites artists from all over the world to submit projects that show the richness of plants and their importance for the earth’s ecosystem. The Prize is open to artists from all over the world. The winner receives €12 thousand to support artwork in progress and benefits from an (optional) residence run by the Museum of Hunting and Nature at the Belval Domaine. In parallel, a call for projects is open for the COAL Student Prize – Culture & Diversity for students at schools in the artistic and cultural field. The application deadline is 19 March 2023.


Biodiversityon a Changing Planet

Deadline: 20 March 2023

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) invites submission of interdisciplinary proposals addressing grand challenges in biodiversity science within the context of unprecedented environmental change, including climate change. The program supports a comprehensive and integrative approach to understanding planetary biodiversity from a functional perspective. Research supported by this program will improve modeling and forecasting of the consequences of functional change in biodiversity. The program supports both US-only collaborative proposals and proposals with international partnerships with National Science Foundations in China, Brazil, and South Africa. Proposals may be submitted by non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education. The total anticipated funding amount is up to US$17 million. Depending on the quality of proposals, 4-6 awards are estimated to be made for design and implementation. Applications must be submitted by 29 March 2023.


International Green Gown Awards

The International Green Gown Awards recognize exceptional climate sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges. Students and universities are invited to submit solutions to the climate and environmental crisis. The Awards are open to any university or college across the world. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2023.


Improving the Health of our Oceans

Deadline: 31 March 2023

11th Hour Racing is committed to mobilizing the sailing and marine communities to improve the health of our oceans. For that reason, 11th Hour Racing seeks innovative projects that address dynamic environmental challenges in one or more of the program’s focus areas: reduce ocean pollution, advance clean technologies and best practices, and foster ocean stewardship. Applications from non-profit organizations from all around the world are welcome. Typical grants range from US$10 thousand to US$100 thousand, with an average grant size of $25 thousand. Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme

Deadline: 09 March 2023

KU Leuven is the largest university in Flanders, Belgium. As one part of its cooperation to advance international development, KU Leuven offers Global Minds Scholarships to candidates from developing countries. Global Minds is a ‘sandwich’ system, which means that 50% of the research takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the scholar. The scholarships have a duration of 48 months. The program also reimburses travel costs from the home country of the PhD student to Belgium. Online applications have to be completed before 09 March 2023.


Incubation Program on How to Start a Charity

Deadline: 12 March 2023

Charity Entrepreneurship accepts applications for a two-month, fully cost-covered boot camp open to individuals who want to create, start, and operate an effective charity. The Incubation Program covers management, fundraising, impact analysis, and on-hands knowledge of established non-profit organizations. New organizations will receive seed grants of up to US$200 thousand in addition to legal support, and connections to donors, mentors, and potential employees. There is no geographical restriction for applicants. The deadline for applications is 12 March 2023.


Young Social Entrepreneurs

Deadline: 12 March 2023

Young Social Entrepreneurs (YSE) Global is an eight-month program for young changemakers who wish to start or scale up their social enterprises in Singapore and beyond. Participants have access to online workshops, remote mentorship, regional learning and pitching sessions. Shortlisted teams have the chance to win S$20 thousand in funding to launch or scale their social enterprise. Eligibility extends to individuals aged between 18 to 35 years, with a viable and innovative business solution to a social issue anywhere in the world. The YSE Global is open to participants of all nationalities. The application deadline is 12 March 2023.


Short-Term Projects

Deadline: 16 March 2023

The Flemish Inter-University Council (VLIR-UOS) invites applications for Short Initiative projects that aim to build and deepen academic/scientific collaborations among diverse teams of academics and researchers. Short Initiatives focus on a sustainable development challenge. The objective is to strengthen research and educational capacities of higher education and science institutions in partner countries in Latin America, Africa and Southeastern Asia. Project budgets amount to a maximum of €70 thousand for two years. The deadline to submit proposals is 16 March 2023.


Catholic Mission Activities

Deadline: 31 March 2023

The Loyola Foundation supports family-based charitable organizations in less developed countries worldwide. Past grants have helped finance the installation of solar power plants, water wells, or the construction of churches, schools, and health clinics. Generally, the Foundation accepts requests up to US$20 thousand. Projects must be part of an overseas catholic mission activity. Completed applications must be received by 31 March and 30 September 2023.
