The Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge seeks game-changing innovations that will help transform the food system to be more sustainable and empower consumers to make choices benefitting both personal and planetary health. The Challenge will award up to eight US$25 thousand grants, up to three US$100 thousand grants and up to two US$250 thousand grand prizes. Nonprofits or academic or research institutions located in any country and early-stage U.S. based for-profit companies are eligible to apply. Individuals are not eligible to apply. However, teams of students or researchers may participate as part of an organization’s submission. Applications are due on 01 August 2023.

Standards and Trade Development Facility

International Sanitary and Phytosanitary Requirements

The Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) aims to increase the capacity of farmers, processors and traders in developing countries to implement international SPS standards to gain and maintain market access. The STDF seeks applications to improve its food safety, animal and plant health capacity. Grants are expected to help address particular challenges or issues that affect trade to international markets. Projects should have a maximum duration of three years, or less. The STDF offers grants of up to US$1 million for projects that promote compliance with international SPS requirements. Public and private sector entities as well as non-profit non-governmental organizations are eligible to apply. The deadlines to apply for funding in 2023 are 24 February and 11 August 2023.

Conscious Food Systems Alliance

Conscious Food Incubator

The Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA) invites applications for the Conscious Food Incubator to support the experimentation of innovative approaches to transform food systems. The aim is to support people from across food and agriculture systems to cultivate the inner capacities that activate systemic change and regeneration. UNDP will fund four pilot interventions of up to US$20 thousand. There is no specific geographic focus or restriction on the location of beneficiaries or applicants. Applicants have to be civil society organizations, including non-governmental academic or educational institutions. The application deadline is 18 August 2023.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) intends to support creative approaches towards implementation of the program with the aim to strengthen the capacity of households, communities, conservancies, county governments, and the private sector to contribute to the development of sustainable local food systems. USAID intends to fund one award of US$49 million in total funding over a five year period. Eligible organizations include U.S. and non-U.S. non-profit organizations and for-profit organizations willing to forego profit. The closing date for applications is 21 August 2023.

Agriculture Greenhouse Gas Fellowship

The Climate, Food and Farming, Global Research Alliance Development Scholarships (CLIFF-GRADS) Program is a capacity training program for early-career scientists from developing countries to conduct applied research in agriculture greenhouse gas emissions quantification and mitigation. Seed Grants Program

Wild Animal Initiative provides small amounts of funding to facilitate projects that will test promising new techniques or approaches, incorporate welfare assessments into ecological research and management, or adapt animal welfare science approaches for wild contexts. Seed Grants are ideal for early-career scientists or more established principal investigators who have no previous experience with wild animal welfare research. Grant size varies from US$2 thousand to US$30 thousand. The small grants program is open to anyone, although Wild Animal Initiative is especially interested in supporting postdocs and PhD students pursuing a long-term research career in the field of wild animal welfare, and researchers who have not previously included welfare considerations in their work. Expressions of Interest have to be submitted by 04 August 2023.

People’s Trust for Endangered Species

The People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) makes grants to scientific researchers and conservationists worldwide for work that helps preserve endangered species, either through research or applied field work. Satoyama Development Mechanism 2023

The IGES, the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies on Sustainability, and Japan's Ministry of the Environment announce the latest round of sub-grants under the Satoyama Development Mechanism. The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) promotes the sustainable use of Socio-Ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes. Grants are up to US$20 thousand for field projects; research; collaboration activities; and capacity building and outreach that link ecosystems and community systems on a sustainable basis. Applicants must be approved members of the IPSI at the date of submitting project proposals. The application deadline is 15 August 2023.

Wildlife Acoustics aims to advance animal biology research, habitat monitoring and environmental conservation through bio-acoustics recording technology. The Wildlife Acoustics Scientific Product Grant Program offers US$4 thousand of product-in-kind grants to biologists, researchers, conservationists, and students who work for charitable, educational, and other tax-exempt organizations. Applications are open for the 2024 Women for the Environment (WE) Africa’s Leadership Program. Women for the Environment is a mentorship program for women leaders who focus on conservation and environmental protection in Africa. The program includes monthly online sessions and two in-person retreats for intensive community-building and personal growth. Eligibility extends to African nationals with a minimum of 15 years of experience working in the environmental space in the government, NGO, or private sector. Conservation Technology Award

EarthRanger offers two grants in the amount of US$15 thousand to organizations that are deploying technology to advance their work in conservation. Any organization, protected area and government entity working to safeguard wildlife and their habitats through tech, including but not limited to, the security of endangered animals, animal behavioral research, anti-poaching enforcement, ecological management, and human-wildlife coexistence, is eligible to apply. The Future for Nature Award aims to stimulate a new generation of nature conservation leaders. The award is made to candidates of any nationality or residence, not older than age 35, who have achieved substantial and long-term benefit to the conservation status of one or more animal and/or plant species, or that of a specific population. Work related to the conservation and protection of endangered species is a priority. The award is made to individuals, not organizations. Each of the three award winners will be given a cash prize and a sculpture. The winners are expected to invest their prize of €50 thousand in a conservation project of their own choice. Climate Change & Environmental Justice Fellowship

The Smithsonian launches two new in-residence fellowship programs: Smithsonian Climate Change Fellowship and Smithsonian Environmental Justice Fellowship. Each program will support a cohort of 2-5 fellows who will receive a stipend to conduct independent research that utilizes Smithsonian resources (e.g., data, facilities, expertise). Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins and propose to conduct research in-residence for a period of no less than 12 months and no more than 24 months. Candidates will receive a stipend of US$62 thousand per year, plus a research allowance up to US$5 thousand. The application deadline is 31 August 2023.

The program makes high-quality laboratory equipment and supplies more affordable to university departments in low- and middle-income countries. Seeding Labs receives donated equipment from a variety of sources, including research institutions and manufacturers. Applicants submit online requests for items included in the Seeding Labs equipment inventory. Items are mainly for biology and chemistry. The average value of the items included in a shipment, based on the secondary (used) market, is generally in the range of US$100 thousand. Western Union Foundation Fellowship

The School Enterprise Challenge is an international business program for schools run by the educational charity Teach A Man To Fish. It guides and supports teachers and students to plan and set up real, sustainable school businesses and generate real profits to help support their school or a social cause of their choice. Thematic areas include agriculture, drinking water and sanitation, and the environment, among others. Prizes are between US$250 and US$5 thousand, including in-kind donations like laptops and cameras. Please note that only pre-primary schools, primary schools, secondary schools and technical/vocational colleges are eligible (universities are not eligible to apply). The Africa Region of the World Bank Group seeks application for the 2024 WBG-Africa Fellowship Program for Ph.D. Students and recent Ph.D. graduates who are Sub-Saharan nationals. The five award categories include one on urban food systems, and one on addressing climate change and reducing pollution. The Africa Science Journalism Awards (ASJA) recognizes and honors excellent reporting on science and innovation in Africa and aims to improve and increase coverage of science on the continent. The award will be given to African journalists whose stories cover health, climate change and environment, and/or agriculture. Prizes range from US$5,000 to US$1,500. The award is open to journalists and media houses, editors, and scientists. Stories must be informative and highlight how science is improving the lives of Africans.
