WEBINAR: The effects of agroecology. Why are metrics needed?

2 July 2021. From a science perspective agroecology, applies ecological concepts and principles to manage interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment. It aims at securing food security and nutrition for all and at all times. It relies on traditional knowledge enriched by scientific research and innovation. It is a complex concept and appropriate measures and metrics are key to demonstrate its numerous and wide benefits.

Resources:
  • The Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology
The Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP) on agroecological approaches to building resilience of livelihoods and landscapes works to address key knowledge and implementation gaps to support agroecological transitions. It aims to provide evidence to underpin advocacy and inform policy makers and donors about the environmental and social benefits of agroecological approaches. The TPP Community of Practice on GLFx aims to build a fully inclusive diverse community that reflects these aims.
  • Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) (94 pp.)
The need for harmonized evidence on agroecology was a systematic recommendation from the various global and regional consultations on agroecology organized by FAO between 2014 and 2018, and specifically requested by FAO governing bodies in 2018. To respond to these mandates, FAO and a large number of partners have developed the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE).
  • Handbook for the Evaluation of Agroecology- A method to evaluate its effects and the conditionsfor its development (143 pp.)
In January 2016, Agrisud, AVSF, Cari and GRET set up a working group focusing on “agroecological transitions”, GTAE. The objective was – together with the world of Research and based on their own experiences in cooperation with their partners in developing countries, farmers’ organisations and NGOs – to carry out work to validate the conditions for family farming’s successful agroecological transition and evaluation of the effects and impact of agroecology to contribute, ultimately, to the desired change of scale.

3 June 2021. CFS 48 Side event ''Addressing knowledge and implementation gaps on agroecological transitions: A way forward for research and development through the Transformative Partnership Platform''.

A range of research and development institutions have partnered to address knowledge and implementation gaps related to agroecology, and to use this evidence as part of agricultural and food systems transformation.

The Agroecology Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP), was launched and discussed during this side event, to accelerate and coordinate the work of agroecology partners at international, national and local levels.
