one part of its cooperation to advance international development, KU Leuven
offers 10 PhD scholarships to candidates from developing countries. The
university offers sandwich scholarships, which means that 50% of the research
takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the scholar, as
well as full-time research at KU Leuven (4 years). The scholarships are offered
to proposals that deal with a development-relevant research topic, preferably

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation financially supports the Ibrahim
Leadership Fellowship position in the African Development Bank. The Fellowship
allows talented individuals to increase and enhance their professional

Fellow includes energy (“lighting up and powering Africa”); agriculture

The Biovision Foundation, in partnership with the Agropolis
Foundation, awards the SHIFT Prize to recognize collaborative and
transdisciplinary research for development projects and initiatives that have
made exemplary contributions to the agroecological transformation of food

The Gregory Award gives students or early-career
professionals from developing countries the opportunity to attend the annual
Society of American Foresters (SAF) National Convention (November 2021,
California, USA). The award offers one individual complimentary registration
and US$2 thousand to cover travel costs. Applicants must demonstrate past
performance and contribute to their home or host country’s forestry education,

Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund

Taiwan's program of development assistance includes
scholarships for university students in eligible developing countries to study
in Taiwan. The program provides full scholarships for applicants from selected
countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean region,
Latin America, and certain other countries. Subject areas at Taiwan's
participating universities include tropical agriculture, aquaculture technology
and management, environmental sustainable development, and others.
Undergraduate students receive NT$12 thousand per month as an allowance,
Masters students receive NT$15 thousand per month, and PhD students receive
NT$17 thousand per month, plus travel, fees and other costs for the program.

applications for the International Innovation Award for Sustainable Agriculture
on the theme ‘Innovation to transform food systems’. Individuals, private
companies and institutions worldwide may submit agricultural innovations
(digital innovation, products, or practices) that contribute to the
environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development. The
innovation award is divided in two categories: Category A (US$ 30 thousand) for
excellence in digitization and innovation for sustainable food systems;
Category B (US$ 30 thousand) recognizes an innovation that specifically
empowers youth (under 35) in sustainable food systems. The call closes on 19

The Agropolis Fondation aims to foster new collaborations
across agricultural research disciplines and/or stakeholders for co-learning
(i.e., cross-learning between researchers from different disciplines, between
academic and non-academic actors, or between researchers and PhD students).
This call will fund the research and training needs of postdoc scientists, PhD
students, young early-career scientists, and summer schools. The Agropolis
Fondation intends to award two Post-doctoral Fellowships (of up to €68 thousand
per project), four partial doctoral Fellowships (of up to €65 thousand per project),
five young scientist research proposals (of up to €20 thousand per project),
and four thematic summer or winter schools (of up to €20 thousand per project).
Please note that the proposal for thematic schools has to be co-submitted by a

The French-African Foundation invites applications for Young
Leaders 2021. The program recognizes and supports young leaders to become true
agents of change in relation to global challenges. Candidates must be between
28 and 40 years old and have French nationality or the nationality of an

days in Senegal, engage in high-level meetings and receive training and

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural
Sciences

The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural
Sciences (JIRCAS) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
(MAFF) of Japan make research awards in agriculture. Up to three young
agricultural researchers with outstanding research proposals in agriculture,
forestry, fisheries and related themes will receive US$5 thousand each to
further their research. Applicants must be nationals of a developing country,
and belong to a non-Japanese research institute or a non-Japanese university.
Candidates need to be younger than age 40 to be eligible. The deadline for

Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in
Higher Education

The Orange Knowledge Program (OKP) makes scholarships to
mid-career professionals from selected developing countries for short courses
(duration 2 weeks to 12 months) and master's programs (duration 12-24 months).
Eligible countries as well as eligible courses are listed in the announcement.

education institution of the course and ask how to apply for the scholarship.

The European Commission (EC) seeks to help reduce
malnutrition and food insecurity in the Indian Ocean region (Mauritius,
Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles). EC intends to grant a total of €5 million for
the increase and diversification of agricultural production, €400 thousand to
improve the nutritional situation of vulnerable populations in Mauritius and
Seychelles, and €1.6 million to improve the nutritional situation of vulnerable
populations in Madagascar and the Comoros. Eligibility extends to
non-governmental organizations, producer organizations, farmers' organizations,

MarTERA provides funding to collaborative research and
innovation projects. The call identifies the following priority areas: (1)
environmentally friendly maritime technologies; (2) innovative concepts for

security. Applicants from Belarus, Belgium, Germany, Malta, Norway, Poland,

business based in Africa for African customers/beneficiaries. The next

The Aga Khan Foundation supports programs in rural
development, broadly defined, in a number of developing countries. It provides
scholarships and loans for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from
the developing world, with priority for masters studies. The Foundation also
considers applications for PhD programs in certain circumstances. Applications
are invited from the following nationalities: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan,
Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda,
Madagascar and Mozambique. The Foundation assists students with tuition fees
and living expenses only. Please note that half of the scholarship amount is

Columbia Center on Sustainable Development

The Connecting Dreams Foundation accepts proposals for the
Global Changemaker Fellowship. The Fellowship is a 10 month program intended to
develop Social Change Leaders who are focused on handling challenges in their
local communities. Fellows participate in workshops, receive training and

for young leaders aged 13-30 years with an entrepreneurial mindset and approach
towards solving community-centric challenges. Students in school, college,

Future Food – A Swiss Research Initiative awards up to ten
postdoc fellowships each year to further expand research and education in the
area of food and nutrition sciences. The fellowship provides personal research
funds for three years, enabling fellows to work on their projects in a Swiss

Mama Cash makes grants in support of grassroots women’s
rights groups that focus on environmental justice, for example, groups that
address the exclusion of indigenous women from decision-making over their land

education, or forming alliances across movements. The average grant size is

New England Biolabs Foundation

grassroots and charitable organizations to support conservation of biological
diversity; ecosystem services; community food security; and marine environment.

Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in
Agriculture

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in
Agriculture (RUFORUM), in partnership with Mastercard Foundation, provides
Masters Scholarships to citizens of any African country for studies at Egerton
University in Kenya and Gulu University in Uganda. The scholarships are
intended for disadvantaged, marginalized communities and those coming from
conflict and post conflict areas. For the academic year 2021/2022, 30
Scholarships will be made available, of which 50% will be for Kenya and Uganda
nationals. About 50% of the scholarships will be awarded to female applicants.

The UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for
Research in the Life Sciences rewards projects and activities of individuals,
institutions, and NGOs for scientific research in the life sciences leading to
improving the quality of human life. Projects in life sciences contribute to

submitted by governments of UNESCO's member states, and by NGOs maintaining
official relations with UNESCO that are active in the fields covered by the
Prize. The Prize amount of US$350 thousand may be equally divided among a

The Halcyon Incubator program equips early-stage social
entrepreneurs from all around the world with support to transform their ideas

technical instruments to support projects proposed by enterprises, cooperatives
and institutions. Funding is targeted mainly to for-profit organizations and

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in
Agriculture (RUFORUM) sponsors a competition for young African entrepreneurs
(< 35 years) to showcase their business innovations in agribusiness.
Although the focus of the competition is agribusiness, business innovations in
other themes (e.g., natural resources, meteorology, urbanization, green
economy, etc.) will also be considered. Competition will provide seed funding
to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas. The

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) invites women

calls for applied research projects to address climate change adaptation and
resilience of family farming in Angola. The priority of this call is to find
options for the improvement of family farming, test them, and assess their
contribution to resilience. Grant funding ranges from €800 thousand to €1
million. Eligibility extends to universities, agriculture research

experience in conducting operational research projects in developing countries

Athens Photo World will award €15 thousand to a completed project of reportage

LabexMER is a program of France's Ministry of Research and
Education to address key questions about the global ocean, the deep ocean, and
the coastal ocean. LabexMER offers four two-year postdoctoral fellowships for
international young scientists to propose research projects in marine sciences
to be carried out in one or several LabexMER laboratories in western France.
Fellows will receive an annual salary of €37 thousand and support to cover travel

Indian National Academy of Sciences

India's National Science Academy administers the JRD-Tata
Fellowships to support visiting scientists from the developing world and
promote South-South cooperation. The program is open to applicants from
developing countries (except India) younger than age 45, and who possess doctorate
or masters degrees in science or equivalent degrees in engineering/medicine.
Past participants have included several in agriculture, biological sciences,
and geo-sciences. The fellowship is for three months and includes
transportation, maintenance allowance, accommodation, and contingencies. The

biotechnology, basic life sciences, bioenergy, and many other fields. The
grants are intended to facilitate the creation of research facilities in

ICGEB's member states. Grants are a maximum of €25 thousand per year for

seeks applications for the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Research Program
in North America. Pre-proposals must relate to sustainable solid waste

grants have ranged from $15 thousand to over $500 thousand with an average
grant size of about $160 thousand for 2 years. There are no restrictions in

The New Earth Foundation (NEF) seeks Letter of Inquiries

provide clean water to poor communities, planting trees for clean air, and many

GlobalGiving is an online platform to raise funds for
grassroots projects worldwide across many sectors and themes – including in
agriculture, energy, environment, and natural resources. GlobalGiving announces
a new Accelerator program that will offer virtual training in online
fundraising and participation in a two-week crowdfunding campaign. The program
is open to nonprofit organizations anywhere in the world. Organizations that
successfully complete the GlobalGiving Accelerator by raising at least US$5
thousand total from a minimum 40 different donors will earn permanent
membership with GlobalGiving, in addition to $30 thousand in matching funding

The Embassy of Japan in Uganda provides financial assistance
to non-profit, development-oriented organizations in support of community
development projects in Uganda. Any projects geared towards grassroots

The Global Development Network (GDN) and the French
Development Agency (AFD) launch the AFD-GDN Biodiversity and Development Award.
The program creates an opportunity for researchers based in select developing

four individual research grants (each up to US$40 thousand) for a 24-months
project. The call is open to teams of researchers belonging to a university or
any other research oriented organizations based in Benin, Burkina Faso,

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) funds climate
projects that address pressing challenges in the areas of climate change
mitigation and biodiversity conservation, including the unique issues caused by

apply as a consortium. Nonprofit organizations, enterprises, universities and

one part of its cooperation to advance international development, KU Leuven
offers 10 PhD scholarships to candidates from developing countries. The

well as full-time research at KU Leuven (4 years). The scholarships are offered
to proposals that deal with a development-relevant research topic, preferably

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) provides grants to
implement projects and activities which focus on improving the state of
conservation of World Heritage properties located in Africa. Project activities

Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund

Taiwan's program of development assistance includes

in Taiwan. The program provides full scholarships for applicants from selected

for AArk seed or start-up grant projects. Workshop grants of up to US$750 are
available to attend conservation-related workshops. Mentorship grants of up to
US$1500 are available to organizations which have previously received an AArk
seed or start-up grant. Emergency grants offer limited funding to past
recipients of AArk grants for emergency situations such as emergency rescue of
wild populations facing imminent threat of extinction. Projects should work
with species in their range countries, involve range-country biologists,
conform to biosecurity standards, and observe other guidelines explained on the

The Anzisha Prize seeks young innovators ages 15-22 in
Africa who develop and implement innovative solutions to challenges facing
their communities. Past awards include innovations in energy, agriculture, and
ecological consumer products. The grand prize winners will share prizes worth

The BBVA Foundation makes awards for biodiversity
conservation in Spain and internationally. The Foundation’s goal is to publicly
recognize the work done by conservationist organizations, institutions and
agencies in carrying forward environmental conservation policies and projects.
For Spain, there is one award of €250 thousand for actions in biodiversity
conservation, and another award of €80 thousand for environmental
communication. For the rest of the world, there is one award of €250 thousand

International Herpetological Symposium

The Alstom Foundation invites projects proposals from NGOs

calls for applied research projects to address climate change adaptation and
resilience of family farming in Angola. The priority of this call is to find
options for the improvement of family farming, test them, and assess their
contribution to resilience. Grant funding ranges from €800 thousand to €1
million. Eligibility extends to universities, agriculture research
institutions, and international organizations. Applicants must have proven
experience in conducting operational research projects in developing countries
in the following areas: agriculture, livestock, climate change/environment,

The Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA)
provides small grants to developing countries to support innovation for
effective, long-term adaptation to climate change. The program is open to

Asia-Pacific and Latin America and Caribbean. AFCIA will select 25 project
concept notes in total to implement micro-projects (maximum funding US$250

French Ministry of Research and Education

LabexMER is a program of France's Ministry of Research and
Education to address key questions about the global ocean, the deep ocean, and
the coastal ocean. LabexMER offers four two-year postdoctoral fellowships for
international young scientists to propose research projects in marine sciences
to be carried out in one or several LabexMER laboratories in western France.
Fellows will receive an annual salary of €37 thousand and support to cover
travel expenses, equipment and supplies (€5 thousand per year). The deadline

Indian National Academy of Sciences

India's National Science Academy administers the JRD-Tata
Fellowships to support visiting scientists from the developing world and
promote South-South cooperation. The program is open to applicants from
developing countries (except India) younger than age 45, and who possess
doctorate or masters degrees in science or equivalent degrees in
engineering/medicine. Past participants have included several in agriculture,
biological sciences, and geo-sciences. The fellowship is for three months and
includes transportation, maintenance allowance, accommodation, and
contingencies. The application deadlines are 30 April and 31 October of each

Organization

The UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable
Development honors outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions,
organizations or other entities engaged in activities on Education for
Sustainable Development. Nominated projects and programs should address the
three integrated dimensions of sustainability -- society, economy, and
environment -- in innovative ways. The Prize consists of three annual awards of
US$50 thousand each. Nominations can be submitted by governments of UNESCO
member states, and by NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO. The deadline

recognizes woman scientists from least-developed countries with scientific

other themes related to sustainability. The winner will receive a cash award of
US$4 thousand. Candidates should be working and living in an LDC country for at

iF International Forum Design GmbH

German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation

plan to increase their emissions reduction plans and gear toward a
carbon-neutral economy. The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature
Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) provides funding and invites project
applications for a combination of technical assistance and climate finance, to
enable partner countries to implement their enhanced NDCs. Funding ranges
between €5-20 million. The NAMA Facility is open to projects across a range of
countries and sectors. The deadline for project outlines (i.e., preliminary

Filmmakers Without Borders seeks applications for its
Filmmaking Grants to support independent filmmakers around the world via grants
and other funding initiatives. Supported projects include narrative films,
documentary films, and new media projects that align with themes of social
justice, empowerment, and climate change. Grants are available for all of the
following stages of production: Development (up to US$1,000); Production (up to
US$5,000); Post-production: (up to US$2,500); and Film Festival Applications
(up to US$750). There are three grant cycles throughout each year

German Federal Environmental Foundation

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) offers 60
research fellowships per year to young scientists in Germany and
internationally across all disciplines of environmental protection. The funding
period is 36 months with a monthly stipend of €1,500. DBU welcomes subjects of
international importance, although the work has to be done mainly in Germany,
and with a clear reference to the German environmental situation. DBU expects
good German language skills from all applicants. The application deadlines are

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program supports
non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the U.S. for
experienced professionals from countries that are undergoing development or political
transition. Fellows are hosted at universities in the USA. Program fields

policy, and climate change; and many others. Applications are made through the
U.S. Embassies or Binational Fulbright Commissions in eligible countries, with

Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in
Higher Education

The Orange Knowledge Program (OKP) makes scholarships to
mid-career professionals from selected developing countries for short courses
(duration 2 weeks to 12 months) and master's programs (duration 12-24 months).
Eligible countries as well as eligible courses are listed in the announcement.
Interested applicants need to first select a course and then contact the
education institution of the course and ask how to apply for the scholarship.
The scholarship program offers three application rounds each year. The current

The BBVA Foundation annually makes awards to recognize
innovative and fundamental advances in science, culture, and collaboration.
Thematic areas include ecology and conservation biology; climate change; and

The New Earth Foundation (NEF) seeks Letter of Inquiries
(LOIs) to fund innovative environmental initiatives that are working to help
eliminate pollution and to save the planet’s ecosystems, and community projects
that create models of social sustainability. Past projects include gardening
and building houses in earthquake impacted regions, using solar equipment to
provide clean water to poor communities, planting trees for clean air, and many
others. NEF only funds 501(c)(3) organizations. Applicants from outside the US
may apply through a fiscal sponsor. Letters of Inquiry can be sent at any time
during the year. These letters are reviewed twice a year and applicants that
fit the requirements will receive the invitation to submit a full grant
application. The deadlines for review are 01 February and 01 July each year.

GlobalGiving is an online platform to raise funds for
grassroots projects worldwide across many sectors and themes – including in
agriculture, energy, environment, and natural resources. GlobalGiving announces
a new Accelerator program that will offer virtual training in online
fundraising and participation in a two-week crowdfunding campaign. The program
is open to nonprofit organizations anywhere in the world. Organizations that
successfully complete the GlobalGiving Accelerator by raising at least US$5 thousand
total from a minimum 40 different donors will earn permanent membership with
GlobalGiving, in addition to $30 thousand in matching funding and bonus prizes.
