COP27: Africa pavilion, AFDB and African panels

COP27 or “the African COP” is an opportunity to spotlight the African continent's special needs and circumstances.

The African Development Bank will take part in COP27 to join African countries in amplifying Africa’s voice and priorities on climate change. It will:

• Enhance strategic partnerships to significantly mobilize new financial resources.
• Shape the global COP27 narrative on such key issues energy transition, nature-based solutions, adaptation finance, and loss and damage.
• Highlight the bank’s significant commitments, including Paris Alignment and African Development Fund (the African Development Bank’s concessional lending arm to low-income African countries) commitments
• Showcase Africa’s potential to drive global emissions down and grow sustainably: 65% of remaining arable land in the world; youthful labor, Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) (3.3 trillion Market), abundant renewable energy (10 TW solar, 350 GW hydropower, 150 GW wind, and 15 GW geothermal).
• Engage with Egypt and key African climate change stakeholders for a successful COP27 in Africa.

Nov. 9. Climate change initiatives of regional institutions in West Africa

West African institutions are supporting their Member States to implement climate related actions contributing to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The side event was an opportunity to showcase key initiatives and experiences of these institutions.

Nov. 9. Forests in Africa – how satellites support climate actions

European Space Agency (ESA) / Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU Jena) / Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC) Forests play a fundamental role for the success of the Paris Agreement. 

Several case studies in moist and dry African forests highlighted how Earth observation data are included and enhance national and regional efforts to gain accurate and transparent information on their status and dynamic.
