The University of Montpellier and its I-SITE MUSE partners offered four days devoted to higher education, research and innovation on the eve of the New Africa France Summit held in Montpellier on October 8, 2021.

Scientists, politicians, citizens and journalists discussed six topics: biodiversity, food systems, agroecological transitions, water, Nourish-Heal-Protect technology, international health and One Health.

Session 6. Sustainable cocoa

Round table "economic and political actors": bringing together producers, professional organizations, cocoa companies, public authorities, and researchers

Four African countries (Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria) supply more than 70% of the world's cocoa. Faced with global challenges such as climate change, consumer demands and the necessary improvement in the living conditions of producers, the cocoa sectors are evolving in various ways towards greater sustainability. Research, training, entrepreneurship and public policies support these transitions.

The objective of this session was to identify the conditions for the success of sustainable cocoa sectors integrating the expectations of consumers and producers, while developing effective value chains at social, economic and environmental levels.

​The session took place in 3 stages
  • An introduction to the determinants of chocolate quality,
  • Testimonials from actors committed to the sustainable production of cocoa,
  • A debate on economic models to stimulate sustainable and fair chocolate production.
