The AIS is an Africa-wide and home grown initiative aimed at harnessing the innovation potential of the continent.
The focus of AIS 2018 included energy access, water, health, food security and climate change.
The European Commission organized a Workshop session on Creating opportunities for innovation cooperation between Africa and Europe; and a full day awareness activity " Horizon 2020 Info Day" to share with Participants the Funding opportunities for cooperation between Africa and Europe through Horizon 2020. The EC was represented by Mrs. Maria Cristina Russo at the launch of the Summit. Mme Maria Cristina Russo is Director for International Cooperation in DG Research and Innovation since July 2013. She is responsible for promoting research and innovation cooperation with international partners in order to: strengthen the EU's scientific excellence and attractiveness; foster its industrial competitiveness; tackle global societal challenges; and support the EU's external policies, including trade, development and enlargement.

The AIS is an Africa-wide and home grown initiative aimed at harnessing the innovation potential of the continent.
It aims to mobilize the people and, especially those with the ‘power to act’, including investors, the people with the ideas, the policy makers, the researchers and academics, the business community, the youth, as well as innovators and thinkers into a coalition for collective action to promote and build an enabling environment for innovation in Africa.
