The Commonwealth Foundation makes grants to civil society organizations in Commonwealth countries to support participatory governance. Composting Council Research and Education Foundation

The International Compost Awareness Week Committee invites submissions for its annual poster contest. This year’s theme is “For Healthier Soil, Healthier Food…Compost!”. The Chevening Scholarships provide full or partial funding for full-time courses at postgraduate level, normally a one-year master’s degree, in any subject at any UK university. Chevening Scholars come from 150 countries, excluding the USA and the EU. Applicants complete the application forms for their chosen universities. World Food Programme

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) accepts applications for the WFP Innovation Challenge. WFP seeks low- and high-tech solutions, including digital tools addressing the global food crisis. Projects will be considered for a six-month acceleration program with access of up to US$100 thousand in equity-free funding. Eligibility extends to start-ups (profit or not-for-profit) and WFP employees who are collaborating with NGOs, government or private sectors. Applications can be submitted until 03 November 2022.

African Development Bank

Deadline: 4 November 2022

The AgriPitch Competition is a two-week-long business development program on strategic partnerships for agriculture projects. Participating agripreneurs will receive follow-up mentorship and coaching for a period of six months. The program offers total grant funding of US$140 thousand. Eligible applicants have to be less than 35 years of age and must be involved in an agriculture value chain focused business. The application deadline is 04 November 2022.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FOA) calls on children and teens from all over the world (age 5 to 19) to use their imagination and create a poster showing a world where no one is left behind, and everyone has access to healthy and affordable food. Winners will be promoted by FAO offices around the world and receive a surprise gift bag. Entries have to be submitted by 04 November 2022.

D-Prize

Deadline: 6 November 2022

The D-Prize funds pilot projects that more widely distribute relatively low-cost products and services in the fight against poverty. The current challenges include social enterprises for innovations in specified themes of agriculture; energy; WASH; and several other categories. The D-Prize will award 30 teams with up to US$20 thousand each to launch nonprofits or social ventures that can distribute proven poverty interventions to people in need. Eligibility to compete extends to entrepreneurs anywhere in the world, and of any age or background. The D-Prize invites concept notes before 16 October 2022 (early deadline); 06 November 2022 (regular deadline); or 27 November 2022 (limited extension).

Japan Science and Technology Agency

The Japan Science and Technology Agency, in collaboration with the Japan International Collaboration Agency, calls for proposals for the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS). Proposals are invited in the following research fields: environment/energy; bio-resources; and disaster prevention and mitigation. The SATREPS program provides funding of approx. ¥ 100 million per project per year. Researchers external to Japan should consult their national government agency responsible for ODA technical cooperation, the Embassy of Japan, or JICA offices in their resident countries. Social Shifters

Social Shifters announces the Global Innovation Challenge to help young leaders and founders to solve the social or environmental issues that matter to them. The challenge seeks creative ideas, projects, and business solutions to the problems that matter to local communities and welcomes ideas from anywhere in the world. Participants compete for awards of up to US$10 thousand to deliver activities that improve lives, help communities, and protect the planet. All ideas must be led by young people aged between 18-30 years old. The application deadline is 09 November 2022.

UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council

The BBSRC Partnering Awards aim to set up partnership links between UK and overseas laboratories, promote the exchange of scientists, particularly early career scientists, and to promote access to facilities. Funding of up to £30 thousand is available for a period of up to four years for partnerships with bioscience laboratories in countries not currently eligible through existing partnering award schemes. International partnerships focusing on the net zero carbon emissions target, through a sustainable, resilient and bio-diverse agri-food system are especially welcome. Funds can only be used for travel, subsistence and other activities, such as workshops or exchanges. The application deadline is 10 November 2022.

Schlumberger Foundation's 'Faculty of the Future' supports women in developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD and postdoctoral studies at the international level. Grants are in the physical sciences, engineering, and related fields -- including past grants in subjects such as ecology and environment. Grants can be up to US$50 thousand per year for PhD courses and a maximum of US$40 thousand for post-doc research programs. The deadline to submit new applications is 11 November 2022.

United Nations Development Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) invites proposals for projects towards supporting awareness and education on conservation; sustainable livelihoods activities; and alternative sources of income and energy in Zimbabwe. WAAW Foundation

The WAAW Foundation supports African women who seek a STEM-focused college education. The Foundation offers a need-based scholarship of US$500 to undergraduate female African students. Friends of Ocean Action

The Ocean Data Challenge calls for startups and social enterprises that use ocean data to boost ocean conservation and promote the sustainable blue economy. Solutions need to demonstrate a sustainable business model and approach to revenue. Priority is given to companies or social enterprises with a sustainable funding model. Non-profit organizations with a revenue generating project may also be considered. Submissions have to be received by 13 November 2022.

Global Development Network

The Global Development Awards Competition is open for applications. The awards recognize excellence in policy-oriented research, supports research capacity development of researchers in low and middle-income countries and funds innovative social development projects benefiting marginalized groups in the developing world. The competition will feature two categories: a competitive research grant program (worth US$30 thousand) that funds outstanding research proposals that address development issues in low and middle-income countries and a competitive grant program (worth US$45 thousand and US$135 thousand) that supports non-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in low or lower-middle-income countries. The Global Development Network will host open sessions for prospective applicants to provide them with additional information and answer their questions about the application process. The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation makes grants in thematic areas that include marine and ocean conservation. The Foundation is interested in marine protected areas; sustainable fisheries; conserving sharks and rays; conservation of coral reefs; and limiting plastics pollution. American Association for the Advancement of University Women

The American Association for the Advancement of University Women (AAAUW) provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the USA who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Preference is given to women who show prior commitment to the advancement of women and girls through civic, community, or professional work. The Western Union Foundation Fellowship is for young entrepreneurs and community leaders who are from highly marginalized, refugee, and forcibly displaced communities around the globe. Teach A Man To Fish

The School Enterprise Challenge is an international business program for schools run by the educational charity Teach A Man To Fish. It guides and supports teachers and students to plan and set up real, sustainable school businesses and generate real profits to help support their school or a social cause of their choice. Thematic areas include agriculture, drinking water and sanitation, and the environment, among others. Prizes are between US$250 and US$5 thousand, including in-kind donations like laptops and cameras. Please note that only pre-primary schools, primary schools, secondary schools and technical/vocational colleges are eligible (universities are not eligible to apply). Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers

The Royal Geographical Society invites applications for the Gilchrist Fieldwork Award. The aim of the award is to support challenging overseas fieldwork projects carried out by a team of university academics and researchers. The team should comprise up to 10 members, the majority of whom should be British. Previous winning themes include climate change, ecosystem function, climate science and ocean circulation. Global Thinkers Forum

The Global Thinkers Forum brings together a diverse network of thought leaders to share their visions of the future, create meaningful conversations around them, and effect positive change in the world. The Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia (UBC) offers the Future Forests Fellowship, a research grant to a forestry student to enroll in their PhD program. Leading House Africa

Leading House Africa calls for applications from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with a Swiss Institution of Higher Education to further develop and foster new collaborations between Swiss researchers and partners in Africa. Proposals from STEM fields, including biological sciences and medicine are accepted. The call will award a maximum of CHF 15 thousand per research collaboration project. African Leadership Academy

The Anzisha Prize seeks young innovators ages 15-22 in Africa who develop and implement innovative solutions to challenges facing their communities. Past awards include innovations in energy, agriculture, and ecological consumer products. The grand prize winners will share prizes worth US$140 thousand. Terraformation

Terraformation launches the Seed to Carbon Forest Accelerator, a biodiversity-focused, carbon-funded forest accelerator program. The program aims to foster thriving forest communities that preserve biodiversity while increasing the global forest carbon supply. The Accelerator is open to forest creation and restoration teams of all types from around the world. Participants will benefit from expert training, information on creating and registering carbon projects and a free feasibility study to assess their project and its ability to grow into a full-scale carbon project. Early-career conference grants support emerging academics so they can take part in conferences that can have a profound impact on their teaching and research. This year's grants are being offered for both virtual (online) and in-person conferences. Virtual conference grants cover the conference registration fee of up to £600 and a data grant of £50 for applicants who do not have reliable access to Wi-Fi. In-person conference grants are a maximum of £2,000 to cover conference registration fees, flights, accommodation and other travel related costs. The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships program provides outstanding academics based in any country overseas with the opportunity to be based at a UK higher education or other research institution. WIDU.africa supports?job creation in Africa by redirecting remittances from the African diaspora in Europe?into micro and small businesses of relatives or friends in participating African countries. The WIDU Grant supports new and existing businesses with up to €2,500. Currently, WIDU offers local calls targeting green businesses in Kenya and Ethiopia to support enterprises interested in building a sustainable green future in their communities. Target sectors include renewable energy, agriculture, and reduction of waste. Applicants need to either have an existing small business or a concrete business idea. The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) seeks applications for its 2022 Community Engagement Exchange Program with the aim to build the capacity of local innovators working with communities. The program is open to young local leaders addressing issues related to the environment, youth, women, and sustainable development, among others. Community Engagement Exchange is a year-long professional development program with a three-month fellowship in the United States. Right Sharing of World Resources

Right Sharing of World Resources (RSWR) makes seed grants to support income-generating projects led by women. RSWR's current priorities are grassroots organizations selected states and districts of India; Quaker groups in Kenya and Sierra Leone. Projects include many in the production and sale of fruits and vegetables; meat and milk; grain crops; fish; fuelwood; and other enterprises associated with small-scale agriculture and rural livelihoods. Grants are usually US$5,500 (but many are considerably smaller) for a one year project. RSWR has two funding cycles with deadlines on May 31 and November 30 each year. (However, RSWR recommends earlier submissions of at least a month prior to the deadline to allow time for revisions.)

Save Our Seas Foundation

The Save Our Seas Foundation (SOS) Ocean Storytelling Writing Grant supports conservation storytellers. SOS is looking for writers who can tell conservation stories about the oceans, from the animals themselves, to fisheries, to the communities whose lives are intertwined with marine life. Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study

The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) offers the Iso Lomso Fellowships to early-career African researchers in any discipline. The program provides a three-year attachment to STIAS in addition to the possibility of a residency at a sister institute for advanced study in North America, Europe, or elsewhere. Other benefits include support for attending international conferences or workshops, and support to the fellow's home institution for lecturer replacement. The program is aimed at African scholars who have obtained a doctoral degree within the preceding eight years, and who hold an academic position at a university or research institution anywhere in Africa. The Cape Cod Bird Club (CCBC) offers grants of up to US$1000 to support conservation efforts relating directly or indirectly to the well-being or protection of birds. Due to limited funds, for 2022-23, CCBC accepts applications only from proposers working in the Western Hemisphere where many Cape Cod migrants spend some part of their lives. Eligibility extends to organizations that need seed money to begin or additional funding to continue. Applications are reviewed and funded twice a year with deadlines on 01 May and 01 November.


Dierenpark Amersfoort Wildlife Fund

The Dierenpark Amersfoort Wildlife Fund supports projects in nature conservation and species preservation around the world. The fund provides financial support for endangered species conservation, research for veterinary medicine or to help shelter animals. Grants usually range from €1.000 to €10 thousand. The board meets three times per year and evaluates applications on a continuous basis. The next meeting takes place in January 2023, therefore applications must be submitted before 01 November 2022.

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund

The Darwin Initiative invites applications for proposals that deliver effective and successful biodiversity conservation as well as poverty reduction projects. Darwin Initiative Capability & Capacity projects may request between £50 thousand to £200 thousand for projects that focus on developing the capability and capacity of national and local organizations. Innovation projects ranging from £10 thousand to £200 thousand must test a novel approach that if proven could scale to deliver results for biodiversity conservation. The Western Union Foundation Fellowship is for young entrepreneurs and community leaders who are from highly marginalized, refugee, and forcibly displaced communities around the globe. The Global Social Impact House (GSIH) is a seven-day residential program in Costa Rica (February 2023) that provides social entrepreneurs with training they need to advance their ventures. Siemens Stiftung

Siemens Stiftung calls small and medium-sized enterprises with a focus on sustainable energy solutions from Ghana, Malawi, Morocco and South Africa to join the SESA Incubator Program. SESA seeks innovators, start-ups and entrepreneurs that promote productive use of energy approaches, including alternative fuel sources, with the aim to also reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. Green Alley

The Green Alley Award is an annual European prize for start-ups and entrepreneurs in the green economy. The award program focuses on business ideas that help build a circular economy and improve the waste and recycling industry. The contest finalists will be invited to Berlin to compete for a cash prize of €25 thousand, working space in Berlin for six months, and opportunities to raise additional funding. Teach A Man To Fish

The School Enterprise Challenge is an international business program for schools run by the educational charity Teach A Man To Fish. It guides and supports teachers and students to plan and set up real, sustainable school businesses and generate real profits to help support their school or a social cause of their choice. Thematic areas include agriculture, drinking water and sanitation, and the environment, among others. Prizes are between US$250 and US$5 thousand, including in-kind donations like laptops and cameras. Please note that only pre-primary schools, primary schools, secondary schools and technical/vocational colleges are eligible (universities are not eligible to apply). The deadlines for project submission are 22 June, 22 August, and 22 November 2022.

Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers

Association of Commonwealth Universities

Early-career conference grants support emerging academics so they can take part in conferences that can have a profound impact on their teaching and research. This year's grants are being offered for both virtual (online) and in-person conferences. Virtual conference grants cover the conference registration fee of up to £600 and a data grant of £50 for applicants who do not have reliable access to Wi-Fi. In-person conference grants are a maximum of £2,000 to cover conference registration fees, flights, accommodation and other travel related costs. AstraZeneca

The Young One World Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 3 seeks youth-led projects which tackle the causes of air pollution and focus on the long-term health of young people. Projects should focus on individual behavior change, new technologies, or multi-stakeholder advocacy approaches to change laws/policies. The challenge welcomes solutions from young innovators (18-30 years old). The winner will receive a US$50 thousand project startup grant and 12-months of mentorship from a team of AstraZeneca Young Health Programme professionals. Beit Trust

The Beit Trust supports projects for health, education, welfare, and environment in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Themes include wildlife conservation. Additionally, the Trust’s interests in community welfare include drinking water and irrigation water. Grants do not normally exceed £50 thousand. British Academy

The British Academy’s Visiting Fellowships program provides outstanding academics based in any country overseas with the opportunity to be based at a UK higher education or other research institution. Visiting Fellows will work with colleagues at host UK institutions in order to develop new research collaborations and/or deepen existing partnerships. The International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) seeks applications for its 2022 Community Engagement Exchange Program with the aim to build the capacity of local innovators working with communities. The program is open to young local leaders addressing issues related to the environment, youth, women, and sustainable development, among others. Community Engagement Exchange is a year-long professional development program with a three-month fellowship in the United States. To be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 27 at the time of application. Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study

The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) offers the Iso Lomso Fellowships to early-career African researchers in any discipline. The program provides a three-year attachment to STIAS in addition to the possibility of a residency at a sister institute for advanced study in North America, Europe, or elsewhere. Other benefits include support for attending international conferences or workshops, and support to the fellow's home institution for lecturer replacement. The program is aimed at African scholars who have obtained a doctoral degree within the preceding eight years, and who hold an academic position at a university or research institution anywhere in Africa.
