Science Week also marks the roll-out of CGIAR’s new Research Portfolio 2025-2030, a significant scale-up in our ambition and capacity to tackle the impact of some of the world’s most pressing environmental and nutritional challenges. This groundbreaking six-year initiative, CGIAR’s longest to date, will channel $6-$12 billion in estimated funding to deliver critical research for over 100 countries and 3,000 local partners, fostering sustainable farming, food security, and livelihood resilience.
Extract of the program
CGIAR Science Week opened with a high-level plenary session that underscored the organization's unwavering commitment to international agricultural research and the critical role of sustained global investment in innovation, technology, and science.
This session served as a cornerstone for the week, setting the stage for exploring transformative solutions to the complex challenges facing agri-food systems.
- Recognizing the interconnected and context-specific nature of these challenges, the session reflected on past successes and lessons learned while embracing new approaches that prioritize inclusivity, partnership, and innovation.
- A key focus was how CGIAR can foster mission-driven collaborations—particularly through South-South cooperation—to ensure that agricultural advancements reach those who need them most, especially marginalized and underserved farming communities.
- By welcoming diverse perspectives and leveraging cutting-edge research, this plenary guided the reimagining of a sustainable and resilient future for people, the planet, and food systems worldwide.

09/04 Plenary 3: Targeting Transformation - Africa & Harvesting Innovation - Latin America & Caribbean
This Plenary 3– showcased high-level dialogues across two regions. The Africa segment, moderated by Prof. Frans Swanepoel, featured panelists including Dr. Alioune Fall (ISRA), Dr. Babafemi Oyewole (PAFO), Dr. Baboucarr Manneh (AfricaRice), Prof. Cliff Dlamini (CCARDESA), Dr. Eliud Kiplimo Kireger (KALRO), Ms. Julian Barungi (ASARECA), Dr. Aly Abousabaa (ICARDA), Dr. Éliane Ubalijoro (CIFOR‑ICRAF), Dr. Najat Mokhtar (IAEA), Dr. Martin Fregene (AfDB), and Dr. Simeon Ehui (IITA). The Latin America & Caribbean segment, moderated by Dr. Marcela Quintero (Alliance Bioversity–CIAT), included Mr. Ansari Hosein (CARDI), Dr. Jorge Ganoza (INIA Peru), Dr. Marilia Regini Nuti (Embrapa), Dr. Simon Heck (CIP/CGIAR), Dr. Sarada Krishnan (Crop Trust), and Dr. Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula (former Mexico Agriculture Secretary).10/04 Plenary 4: Connecting Science & Growing Frontiers
This session emphasised how CGIAR is leveraging science, innovation, and strategic partnerships to address the pressing global challenges affecting food, land, and water systems. Structured around two key segments—“Connecting Science,” which focused on enabling environments and catalysing solution-driven collaborations, and “Growing Frontiers,” which tackled emerging themes such as diversity, water resilience, and the future of agri-foods—the session featured in-depth panel discussions on AI-driven evidence synthesis and the integration of global, local, and Indigenous knowledge. Among the notable contributions, CABI’s Dr Daniel Elger shared examples of impact from open-access knowledge systems like PlantwisePlus and the Juno Evidence Alliance.
11/04 CGIAR Science Week Strategic Dialogue: Capacity Sharing
The Strategic Dialogue on Capacity Sharing launched the CapSha Accelerator—a collaborative initiative designed to reshape how CGIAR and its partners exchange skills and resources. The session emphasized shifting from traditional, top-down capacity development to a more equitable, co‑created model rooted in digital tools, data innovation, soft‑skills training, and youth and gender inclusion. Speakers highlighted the importance of decolonizing science and fostering “healthier partnerships” across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to ensure shared ownership, retention, and scaling of knowledge and capabilities.
Side Events
07/04/2025. Gathering for Growth: A Unified Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (Opportunity Crops) The implementation of VACS is designed to achieve the above goals through an Implementers Group made up of CGIAR, FAO, IFAD, and Crop Trust. This session brought together the CGIAR Research Centers working under the VACS initiative, highlighting the recent key achievements and investments in coordination and implementation. The aim was to catalyze the ongoing and future work under the CGIAR VACS Portfolio as part of the VACS Implementers Group.
Launched in 2023, VACS is an initiative to diversify and enhance resilience of agrifood systems through climate-adapted and nutritious opportunity crops grown on healthy soils. The VACS governance structure led by the Joint Partnership between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and CIMMYT on behalf of the CGIAR focuses on maximizing collective impact, aligning efforts, and promoting transparency with the goal to grow and strengthen the initiative. VACS leverages the complementary capabilities and networks of the CGIAR Research Centers, catalyzing actions across a wide range of public and private stakeholders aligned with the Theory of Change, This is accomplished through various areas of action, such as Breeding, Seed Systems, Conservation, Public-Private Partnerships, Soils, Smallholder Farmers’ Resilience, and Capacity Building, which align with the CGIAR Science Programs.
08/04/2025. Empowering CGIAR and its Partners to Harness Data for Agronomic Solutions to Global Challenges
This side event explored how CGIAR and its partners can accelerate the development of evidence-based solutions to help stakeholders tackle existing and emerging challenges. The session showcased decision support solutions that leverage climate-smart technologies, and data-driven approaches to address pressing global agricultural challenges. A key focus was on the importance of well-managed, standardized, and accessible data as a foundation for transforming agriculture, particularly in the age of Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies.
Presentations addressed the following topics:
- Accelerating Climate Adaptation Exploring agronomic solutions to address climate change through resilience-building, emissions reduction, and resource efficiency. Highlighting the need for global alignment on evidence-based climate-smart approaches and overcoming barriers to scaling innovation.
- The Solutions Space: Decision Support Tools (DSTs) Demonstrating how Decision Support Tools (DSTs) enhance agricultural productivity, resource efficiency, and sustainability for smallholder farmers. Addressing challenges in delivering field-specific agronomic advice at scale and bridging the gap between precision agriculture research and service providers.
- Empowering Solutions and Innovation Exploring the potential of data-driven transformation in the Global South, making a case for data standardization and open data sharing to power user-friendly tools for rapid innovation and decision-making.
