For 12000 years, farmers have assumed all the responsibility for maintaining or improving the genetic characteristics of their domesticated animals. Now, technology has entered the picture, strengthening the possibilities to realize food security with more effective genetic improvement programme. But as this video shows, even with technology, it is still crucial to carefully consider the contributions of farmers breeds that are adapted to the pressures and conditions of the local environment, and to respect the needs and capabilities of the farmers in policies and plans for increasing food and agriculture production.
