United Nations

Strategic Needs Fellowship


The Strategic Needs Fellowship aims to enable the most vulnerable States, particularly least developed countries, small island developing States and landlocked developing countries, to better address strategically important and time-sensitive issues facing them in ocean affairs and the law of the sea. The Fellowship consists of a four-month training program at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (USA). States are invited to nominate Government officials with limited background in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, who are filling key positions in their Administration for the position. The deadline for applications is 16 February 2024.

Fellows Program for Young Women in Agribusiness


The Advancing Young Women Professional Fellows Program offers capacity-building in agro-entrepreneurship and agri-food system innovation and advances their ability to support women’s economic empowerment. The U.S. program will include a four-week professional internship in Michigan. The program is open to young female agribusiness entrepreneurs working in Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. The application for the program will remain open until 16 February 2024.


Global AgriFood TechPreneur


The Global AgriFood TechPreneur Program is a 12 months food system sustainability business development program for young graduates who wish to transform the food system, end hunger, malnutrition, obesity and food waste. Graduates are invited to submit an application about a food system challenge in their country and their solution to addressing it. Selected participants will be trained to develop a robust and sustainable business plan. Application for the competition is until 20 February 2024.

Animal Welfare Student Scholarship


Animal Welfare Student Scholarships enable students to develop their interests in animal welfare science. Students are encouraged to carry out their own project (whether research or educational) with the aim of contributing to our growing knowledge of how best to assess, or improve, the welfare of animals (for example, farm animals, animals in zoos, pets, or wild animals). Projects may be carried out anywhere in the world. Applications are welcome from undergraduate or MSc students. Support is provided for up to 8 weeks up to a maximum of £2,800. Closing date for applications is 28 February 2024.

The American Ornithological Society (AOS) makes student grants of up to $2,500 to support research in various areas of avian biology by undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. AOS encourages undergraduate students from any region to apply. Applicants must be members of AOS. Latin American students are particularly encouraged to apply for the Alexander Wetmore Memorial Research Award for research in avian systematics, paleo-ornithology, biogeography, and especially neotropical biology. Other AOS grant programs may also be of international relevance. Applications are due by 02 February 2024.

Doc Society

Climate Story Fund


The Doc Society supports stories and impact campaigns from around the world that move humankind closer to a climate just and biodiverse future. The Climate Story Fund will support 6-8 projects with grants ranging from US$50 thousand to US$100 thousand per project. The fund is open to all mediums and will support both production and impact campaigns. Projects may come from all over the world (including localized stories serving local communities) and can be submitted by both new and established artists. Applications for the Climate Story Fund will close 07 February 2024.


Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program


The Mongabay Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program supports up to 12 fellows per year. Fellows will gain experience working with a range of editors at international news outlets, develop their environmental reporting skills, and create a portfolio of original publications to help them advance their careers in journalism. Each fellow will receive US$500 a month for the duration of the six-month fellowship (US$3,000 in total). The fellowship is open to anyone from a low- to upper-middle income tropical country. The application deadline is 10 February 2024.

Wildlife Acoustics

Bio-Acoustics Product Grants


Wildlife Acoustics aims to advance animal biology research, habitat monitoring and environmental conservation through bio-acoustics recording technology. The Wildlife Acoustics Scientific Product Grant Program offers US$4 thousand of product-in-kind grants to biologists, researchers, conservationists, and students who work for charitable, educational, and other tax-exempt organizations. There are no geographical limitations. Applications are evaluated quarterly with deadlines on 15 February, 15 May, 15 August, and 15 November.

United Nations University

MSc in Sustainability Science 2024


The UNU's Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) offers an MSc degree program to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science. UNU-IAS seeks to incorporate perspectives on global change, specifically those related to climate change and biodiversity. The Japan Foundation offers the UNU Scholarship to outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance. The deadline to apply for the MSc program is 25 February 2024.

Indianapolis Zoo

Award for Animal Conservationist


The Indianapolis Prize recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the sustainability of an animal species or group of species. The winner receives US$250 thousand, while five finalists each receive US$10 thousand. To be nominated, applicants must have accomplished an individual achievement or series of achievements that have resulted in a demonstrable positive impact on an animal species or group of species that is likely to improve long-term sustainability. Nominations are open to anyone with knowledge of an individual whose work has had a great impact in the field of animal conservation. The application deadline is 26 February 2024.

Action for Nature

International Young Eco-Hero Awards 2024


This program honors the work of young people between the ages of 8 and 16 who have completed successful projects in environmental advocacy, environmental health, research, or protection of the natural world. The selected individuals are awarded a cash prize (US$500) and certificate, as well as public recognition. The annual competition is open internationally. The application deadline is 28 February 2024.

African Bird Club

Conservation Awards and Expedition Awards


The ABC Conservation Awards (up to £3 thousand) support small and medium-sized bird conservation projects in Africa. Applicants should normally be resident in Africa. The ABC Expedition Awards (up to £5 thousand) take place within continental Africa or adjacent islands, with a strong base in conservation and birds. Applications are reviewed multiple times a year, with deadlines at the end of February, June, and October.

Seabird Group

Small Grants


The Seabird Group supports research, survey, and conservation of seabirds. It awards small grants each year, with priority to Seabird Group members working on Atlantic seabirds. The maximum grant is usually £500 per project. Applications should be submitted by 31 October and 28 February each year.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund

Grants in Support of Endangered and Critically Endangered Species


The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund makes grants to individuals, communities, and organizations for the conservation of threatened or poorly known animal, plant, and fungi species worldwide. The Fund uses the IUCN Red List as the primary guide to the conservation status of a given species, although documented variations for sub-species, distinct populations, and subpopulations will be taken into account. Grants are up to US$25 thousand. Applications must be submitted in English. The next application deadlines are 29 February, 30 June, and 31 October 2024.

Bio-Bridge Initiative


The Bio-Bridge Initiative (BBI) provides seed funding of up to C$20 thousand to incubate projects and partnerships that promote exemplary approaches to address biodiversity-related issues and challenges. Governmental agencies, research and academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local communities in developing countries are eligible to apply. The application deadline is 29 February 2024.


University of California at Berkeley

Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program 2024


The Beahrs ELP sponsors an annual three-week summer course in environmental science, policy, management, and leadership at UC Berkeley. The next course is scheduled for July/August 2024. ELP invites applications from mid-career professionals around the world. Workshops and field trips draw on the strengths of UC Berkeley and the greater San Francisco Bay Area of California. Course participants continue their learning and networking through the Berkeley ELP Alumni Network. The program offers a limited number of partial scholarships. The final deadline for scholarship review is 02 February 2024.

Singapore International Foundation

Young Social Entrepreneurs


Young Social Entrepreneurs (YSE) Global is an eight-month program for young changemakers who wish to start or scale up their social enterprises in Singapore and beyond. Participants have access to online workshops, remote mentorship, regional learning and pitching sessions. Shortlisted teams have the chance to win S$20 thousand in funding to launch or scale their social enterprise. Eligibility extends to individuals aged between 18 to 35 years, with a viable and innovative business solution to a social issue anywhere in the world. The YSE Global is open to participants of all nationalities. The application deadline is 02 February 2024.


Poverty Solutions for Kenya


The ygap accelerator provides support to Kenyan leaders with solutions to poverty. Entrepreneurs and startups with project ideas and solutions for their local community are invited to apply for the training program. The program offers a three-day accelerator followed by twelve months of tailored support including business skills development, strategy insights, mentor support, and more. Participants will gain access to professionals (designers, lawyers, coaches, etc.) and have the opportunity to apply for small grants. Eligibility extends to social entrepreneurs operating in Kenya, who are dedicated to creating a positive change in the lives of people living in poverty. Applications close 03 February 2024.


East Africa Fellowship


The Acumen East Africa Fellows Program is a 6-month program comprising 5 seminars that gives individuals from East Africa the training they need to accelerate their social impact and leadership potential. Eligible countries are Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan & Ethiopia. Past fellows have included several in smallholder agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, fair trade, and other areas. Acumen covers all program expenses related to travel and accommodations, but it does not offer scholarships, stipends, or other funding. The application deadline is 04 February 2024.

World Academy of Sciences

Short Course on Science and Diplomacy


The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) seek candidates for the third AAAS-TWAS course on science and diplomacy. The 5-day course is for young scientists whose work has brought them into the international policy-making arena; policymakers interested in science-based themes that might influence their work; administrators of research institutions; and research funders focused on building international networks. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are due by 05 February 2024.

Canada Fund for Local Initiatives

Community Projects in Zambia


The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) invites proposals that meet the needs of local communities in Zambia. CFLI provides funding to projects that create income-earning opportunities for women (which may also include rural agricultural development). The average contribution is C$30 thousand to C$40 thousand per project. Eligibility extends to not-for-profit local, national, or community-based organizations. The deadline for submission is 05 February 2024.

Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Research Collaboration 2024


Within the framework of Danish development cooperation, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls for research proposals between Denmark and researchers in partner countries. In 2024, the following countries are eligible for research applications: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Palestine, Uganda, Somalia (incl. Somaliland), and Tanzania. Eligible research themes include energy transitions; water resource management; food and agriculture. The expected duration of research projects is up to 5 years within a maximum grant of DKK 10 million for each project. Only universities or research-based institutions registered in Denmark and with a capacity to (co-)supervise Ph.D. students are eligible to submit an application. The application deadline (Phase 1) is 07 February 2024.

iF International Forum Design GmbH

Student Design Award


The iF Student Design Award recognizes students and their future-oriented concepts that aim to solve a global development challenge. The best concepts earn a share of €50 thousand. All winners will be honored with a two-day event in Istanbul. Students and recent graduates of all design-related courses and programs are welcome to register their concepts. The registration deadline for participation is 07 February 2024.

Marie Curie COFUND Program


The Marie Sklowdowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) support research training and career development. The MSCA COFUND scheme aims at stimulating regional, national or international programs to foster excellence in researchers’ training, mobility, and career development. Each proposal under the COFUND scheme shall have a sole participant that will be responsible for matching funds to execute the proposal. Participants submit multi-annual proposals for new or existing doctoral programs or fellowship programs that may be run at regional, national, or international level. The application deadline is 08 February 2024.

Obama Foundation

Leaders Program


The Obama Foundation Leaders Program is a one-year training program for leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions to challenges in their communities or countries. Scholars attend courses and participate in leadership development training. Participants receive a furnished studio apartment during their stay, a monthly stipend to assist with living expenses, as well as travel and tuition fees paid. The program is open to applicants from all around the world. Applications for the 2024-2025 program have to be submitted until 09 February 2024.

Noel Buxton Trust

Promoting Livelihoods in Africa


The Noel Buxton Trust makes grants of up to £10 thousand per year for up to three years for projects in Africa that develop sustainable livelihoods in community settings. Past recent projects on the theme of economic development include examples in livestock raising, aquaculture, and credit for women-led businesses. The Trust especially welcomes applications in support of initiatives that help build sustainable futures in the semi-arid areas of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Sudan, and South Sudan. The Trust invites applications from registered civil society organizations in Africa, and from UK-based charities -- including from diaspora organizations based in the UK – for projects in the priority countries. The next round of funding will run until 09 February 2024.

Accelerator for Entrepreneurs


Because International accepts applications for the Because Accelerator, a free online program for early-to-middle-stage entrepreneurs who want to take their socially innovative product to the next level. Participants will go through a 10-week training program, weekly one-on-one coaching, networking, and at the end of the cohort. There will be an opportunity to compete in a pitch event for a cash prize, long-term coaching support, funding opportunities, and exposure to international markets. Entrepreneurs from around the world are invited to apply by 09 February 2024.

Oxford University

Grants for Collaborative Research with African Research Institutions


The AfOx Catalyst Grants provide seed funding to support the development of collaborative research between researchers based in African research institutions and at the University of Oxford. Travel grants enable researchers to meet in either an African institution or Oxford. Starter Grants fund activities which aim to develop sustainable partnerships and strengthening applications for longer-term fellowships and funding. The maximum grant amount is £5000. Application deadlines are 27 October 2023, 09 February 2024, and 17 May 2024.

Small Grants for Indigenous-led Projects


The Keepers of the Earth Fund (KOEF) is a small grant fund supporting Indigenous values-based community development. Grants range between US$500 and US$7 thousand and are awarded to Indigenous-led projects, organizations, and groups worldwide. Themes of past grants include biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage, climate change, fair use of natural resources, and others. The application deadline is 10 February 2024.

Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa

Writing Workshop


The Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) provides writing training to Africa-based early career researchers working on the themes of governance, democracy, and green energy. The 5-day program will be organized as a writing retreat, with daily seminars and writing sessions. Successful applicants will be provided with funding to cover travel expenses to Ghana from Sub-Saharan Africa. The submission deadline is 10 February 2024.

Social Science Research Council

Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa 2024


The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support research and analysis on peacebuilding. Past topics have included some related to climate change and land issues. Fellowships support six months of field-based research through a stipend of up to US$15 thousand. Applicants must be African citizens currently residing in an African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university. The application deadline is 11 February 2024.

University of Rhode Island

Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists


The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting accepts applications for its annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists. The workshop provides journalists with access to leading scientists and policymakers and a chance to gain a deeper understanding of science-based stories on natural, social, and engineering research guiding an equitable transition to clean energy. The fellowship is designed for early- to mid-career, full-time journalists worldwide. The 2024 annual workshop will explore the clean energy transition. The application deadline is 12 February 2024.


Media Development Opportunity


UNESCO’s International Program for the Development of Communication allows organizations to secure support for their initiatives. Project proposals are encouraged to leverage UNESCO resources, particularly journalism education handbooks. Projects should fall within a budget range of US$10 thousand to US$35 thousand. Each country is invited to submit one national project. The deadline for submission is 12 February 2024.

Explorer Awards 2024


The Scientific Exploration Society (SES) awards "pioneers with purpose" who combine innovative field expeditions with important research contributions, including in subject areas related to the environment and conservation. The awards are intended to provide a financial contribution to the overall cost of the fieldwork phase of scientific exploration. Grants range from US$4 thousand to US$7 thousand. For 2024, SES announces six award categories. The application deadline for a simple online application (stage 1) is 14 February 2024.

Iso Lomso Fellowships for Early-Career African Researchers


The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) offers the Iso Lomso Fellowships to early-career African researchers in any discipline. The program provides a three-year attachment to STIAS in addition to the possibility of a residency at a sister institute for advanced study in North America, Europe, or elsewhere. Other benefits include support for attending international conferences or workshops, and support to the fellow's home institution for lecturer replacement. The program is aimed at African scholars who have obtained a doctoral degree within the preceding eight years, and who hold an academic position at a university or research institution anywhere in Africa. The application deadline is 15 February 2024.

Kellogg School of Management

Sustainable Investing Challenge


The Kellogg-Morgan Stanley Sustainable Investing Challenge invites teams of graduate students from around the world to develop and pitch creative financial approaches and solutions to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges. Graduate students from around the world are invited to participate. The overall winning team receives US$10 thousand and the runner up receives US$5 thousand. Teams must register in advance to request a mentor that gives them feedback on their proposal prior to submission. Deadline for submission of project ideas is 18 February 2024.

Ghent University

PhD Scholarships 2024


Ghent University grants PhD scholarships to promising students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University in Belgium. Before applying each student needs to find a professor from Ghent University who is willing to act as their supervisor. Supported thematic areas include biology, veterinary medicine, agricultural economics, water management, and many others (a complete list of faculties and research topics is provided). The deadline for scholarship applications is 20 February 2024.

Turkish Government

Tükiye Scholarships 2024


The Turkish Government offers scholarships to international students. The government-funded scholarship program is awarded to students who pursue full-time or short-term programs at universities in Turkey. Fields of study include Agriculture, Natural and Applied Sciences, amongst many others. Applications are open from students from all around the world. Türkiye Scholarships Burslari provides financial support and university placements to its awardees. The application deadline is 20 February 2024.

University of Pennsylvania

Workshop for Social Entrepreneurs


The Global Social Impact House (GSIH) is a seven-day residential program in Costa Rica (June 2024) that provides social entrepreneurs with training they need to advance their ventures. Workshops are customized to the needs of fellows. The Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania will provide scholarships, which include accommodation and food. However, fellows are responsible for covering travel and visa-related expenses. The application deadline is 20 February 2024.

German Government

International Climate Initiative: Thematic Selection


The International Climate Initiative (IKI) funds climate projects that address pressing challenges in the areas of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. The funding amount provided by the German Government ranges from €5 million to €20 million per project. Applicants for funding must apply as a consortium. Nonprofit organizations, enterprises, universities and research institutions as well as international intergovernmental organizations are eligible. The selection procedure is done in two stages. In the first stage, interested implementing organizations submit a project outline. Project outlines must be submitted by 27 February 2024.

World Bank

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program


The JJ/WBGSP Scholarship Program provides scholarships to professionals from developing countries who are applying to a master's degree program in a development-related topic. Applicants must first apply for admission to one or more of the Partner Master’s Degree Programs to be eligible for a scholarship. Scholarship recipients receive travel allowance; tuition for the graduate program; basic medical insurance; and a monthly subsistence allowance to cover all living expenses (accommodations, food, etc., including books). The call has to applications windows, with deadlines on 29 February 2024 (Window #1) and 24 May 2024 (Window #2) .

Recognizing the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI), FARA collaborates with the CAADP-XP4 Consortium to establish FARA Data and Information System (FARADataInformS) as a repository for relevant STI metrics, contributing to informed decision-making in agriculture. The primary objective of this consultancy is to improve the FARA Data and Information System (FARADataInformS), a knowledge hub that provides Science and Technology Indicators (STI) metrics at the country level. This upgrade aims to enhance functionality, usability, and effectiveness in disseminating information to stakeholders. It involves integrating databases, linking data sources, and introducing artificial intelligence features to strengthen the FARA Observatory on the Science Agenda and Africa AR4D.
