Bringing together representatives of EU institutions, Member States, partner countries, civil society and the research community, the discussion focused on the strategic role of agricultural research and innovation in the next Global Europe programme. Participants highlighted how interconnected food systems transmit shocks across borders: climate extremes, conflicts, disruptions in energy and fertiliser markets, and trade pressures can rapidly affect agricultural production, supply chains, food prices and livelihoods far beyond where a crisis originates.
The roundtable explored why sustained European investment in food systems research and international research partnerships should form part of the response. Research and innovation can generate global public goods while helping countries build more resilient, sustainable and productive food systems. Particular attention was given to mutually beneficial cooperation between Europe and partner countries and to the contribution that CGIAR and its partners can make through Global Europe.
