The Global People’s Summit rises up against the AU Common Position to the UN Food Systems Summit

20 September 2021
. Africa Regional Consultation for the Global People’s Summit on Food Systems

The Global People’s Summit (GPS) on Food Systems is a Global South-led counter-summit to the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) and its corporate agenda. Happening on September 21 to 23, the GPS gathered the broadest number of rural peoples, people’s organizations, CSOs, and advocates on-ground and online to develop a People’s Action Plan and draw up a Declaration for the radical transformation of the current food regimes towards just, equitable, healthy, and sustainable food systems.

This event formulated the region-specific analysis, demands, and action plans. Policy recommendations and action plans that will result from the consultation will be presented during the closing plenary of the Global People's Summit on Food Systems on September 23.

The African Centre for Biodiversity, as part of the counter mobilisation, on 27 July, met to launch an African position statement, which outlines why they reject the UNFSS, as a continuation of neo-colonial development, corporate capture and the agrarian extractivism on the continent. You can read the AU draft position here.
