- Dr Juliana Cheboi, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Vice-Chair of the Kenya Plant Breeders Association (KPBA), was the featured speaker in the session “Bridging the Gap Through Community Engagements and Outreach Services: Underutilized Legumes Researchers on Call.”
The session addressed the important challenge of bridging the gap between agricultural research and farming communities, with particular attention to underutilized legumes. These crops offer considerable potential for improving nutrition, soil fertility, biodiversity and climate resilience, yet often receive insufficient attention from agricultural research, extension services and markets.
Community engagement and researcher-led outreach can help translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions, strengthen farmer–researcher collaboration and support the conservation, cultivation and wider use of these valuable crops.
